MG MGA - SU Carburetor leak repair

Thanks to all the friends and members input. Mick Anderson you hit the nail on the head, dude. I removed the fuel hose from the forward banjo bolt and unscrewed the float top. I blew through the hose end and released a blockage from the needle valve. I did not get to see what it was. I reassembled and the car ticked nicely onto idle. So, five minutes with a spanner and screwdriver and a good push of air from my lungs...could have saved me a truck and trailer rental and a muffler pipe which got damaged removing the car from the hauler. Oh well, I learned something. How not to spend $245.00!! And keep an adjustable spanner and screwdriver in the trunk!!! Life lessons and the price of a priceless membership - owning an MGA.

You might want to add these to your trunk as well for when you are driving around town:
portable jumpstart battery
set of points and condensor
fan belt
fuses
wrenches
screwdrivers
pliers
good flashlight
oil
steel wool
emery cloth

For longer trips add:
spare fuel pump
spark plugs
anti-freeze
multi meter
feeler gage (for points and plugs)

I have had occasion to use every one of the above items away from home(save the fuel pump)over the course of 34 years of ownership of my 1600.

I am sure that other members of this board will add to the above list.

Don, I have driven my 1600 daily for 35 years and don't even carry a spare wheel or tools!! I have fitted a solid state fuel pump as the SU was unreliable. I do regular maintenance but otherwise just drive it - MGA's can be very reliable cars.

I am siding with my friend Baz on this one. Regular maintenance in the garage gives very good reliability on the road. For normal pottering about I just carry the wheel changing kit. For longer runs (800 miles to Le Mans 2 years ago) I carried a few spanners and screw drivers but never touched them. The only breakdown in the last 10 years was my master cylinder blowout last year and I don't intend to carry a spare of that, plus fluid!
