MG MGA - SU Carburettor Syncronisation
I balance my carburettors with the SU rods in image 1. Works very well. I find them far superior to the vacuum gauges you put over the intake throats. One of the real pluses is you get readings in road running condition. i.e. filters in place.
Over on the MG Experience MGA site Don Tremblay has just shown us a more accurate system to the SU rods, albeit using the same technique. He found the kit on https://www.britishtoolworks.com/ which is a Rolls Royce site. The image in the second photo is credit British Tool Works. Question. Are they available in the UK? Not spotted them yet in my searches. Steve |

Looks like a standard dial gauge to me with some nice brass fixing bezels for the carb dashpot |

Just standard depth gauges mounted in a collar to fit the carb and with rod extensions. Seems over complicated to me, the carbs are not that sensitive to imbalance and the SU tool solution is more than adequate. |

Exactly. I was wondering if to adapt a couple of run out gauges. Don noticed a fluttering of the pots at idle of about 0.25", but I have posed the question if that's due to the dampers not being in place with the dials mounted. |

Speaking as a (retired) engineer, we too often make something more complicated than it needs to be! Note in the description on the British Tool Works site, it says: "They are an economical indicator and must be protected from dirt, shock, moisture and extreme temperatures." So, in addition to being quite expansive, probably not any more useful, these are not something you can throw in your kit in the boot (which is where I carry my SU balancing rods). - Ken |
