MG MGA - Super Economy Mode - (out of gas)

Took me a couple of days to get it done after request. I just posted a new web page on what to do when you run out of gas to (maybe) continue to drive to the nearest gas station. See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/care/cf115.htm

Interesting. Where is the fuel pick-up pipe in the tank? The pipe comes out of the right hand side. Does the pipe extend far inside the tank?

I guess if it just inside the tank there is something to be said for trying to lean the car to the right. In the UK the roads are generally cambered from the centreline so, as we drive on the left this works against us. That said, the driver's weight for us is on the right side, so there is a chance of pooling the fuel to the right side if we can find a flat road, or make all left hand turns to the petrol station!

One of the early warning signs of fuel running low is the increased rate of ticking from the petrol pump. Anyone driving a coupe gets very used to the normal rate of ticking that varies a little with throttle use but is fairly predictable. If the rate of ticking suddenly goes up then either the carbs are flooding or fuel is running out. If in doubt take a sharp rh bend and listen for the change. Not sure if roadster owners can also hear the ticking whilst driving , I suspect not given wind and other noises.

Good tip Barney - must store that in the memory banks for future use.

Sounds like a technique my dad would have had experience with. I know on at least one occasion, he shut down the engine and coasted all the way down Thompson pass, most of the way to Valdez due to low fuel.

My late father-in-law did the same on a long hill in Dorset in his Jaguar. He forgot he had power steering and power assisted braking. He almost did not make the first corner!
