MG MGA - Synchromesh 2nd gear

I just took delivery of a 1959 MGA and it seems the synhromesh is not working when downshifting into 2nd gear. The transmission shifts great up thru the gears, smooth from 4th to 3rd but 2nd it grinds and I believe 1st is not synchromesh capable. How difficult is it to remove the transmission and how difficult is it to repair? Any and all insight on this will be appreciated.

Must pull engine out to remove the gearbox. This is a simple car, so perhaps not as much work as you might first think. I used to pull the engine in 70 minutes, and the gearbox in another 20 minutes (might not be that fast any more). Figure twice as long to put it all back together. If you were well experienced with all the right tools at hand, you might rebuild the gearbox in a few hours (add time to wait for parts delivery). Again, not a tricky job, just time qualifying as sweat equity. Pretty much anyone can do it if you follow instructions.
