MG MGA - syncros and gears grinding
I have posted this on the MG experience so this may be a little redundant to some of you.I will try to make this as short as possible. Here's my dilemma, I am having trouble shifting into 2nd gear either up or down (down won't happen unless I am moving less than 5mph). I can also feel the gears not meshing smoothly in third and every so often even 4th gear. Downshifting to 3rd I can feel a little resistance. The clutch was new about 7K miles ago. Slave has been replace and bled (at least I think I got it bled). Last night when cold it shifted up ok, but down was still difficult. After it warmed up shifting to second got harder and down shifting was almost impossible. Anyone have any thoughts on what could be going on here. This all started very suddenly not over a long period of time. I first thought it was the clutch, but it seems to be engaging and disengaging ok. Is it possible that the syncro's could go bad that quickly? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks....Norm A little more info 61-1622, high starter trans (original not rebuilt, miles unknown) Oil is topped up (20W50) Clutch lever moves 1/2" to 3/4" when depressed Silicone fluid in Master Master rebuilt new line and hose new slave |

Multipule syncro's going at once is unlikely. If your clutch engauges with the pedal just off the floor you may still have air in the system causing clutch drag. A broken snap ring or thrust washer on the mainshaft in the trans could be allowing the gears too much end play. |

What is the clutch pedal movement details? How much free play, in inches, and how much resistive movement, ie, actuating distance, in inches? It may be you are not getting full slave movement (about 5/8" at the push rod/release bearing). Peter. |

When I push on the pedal I have about 1/2" free play before the clutch starts to Release. When it is at the floor there is about 3" before it starts to engage. At the slave, when I have my lovely wife (just in case she reads this) depress the clutch pedal I have about 5/8" movement in the push rod. This is what is confusing about this, the slave cyl. and clutch seem to be working fine. The pedal does not feel different than before this started. I did notice that it does not move from gear to gear when standing still like it used to, it will not go into 1st or 2nd without moving the lever through 3rd and fourth before going back to 1st or 2nd. Reverse is similar in that I have to select another gear (2nd or 3rd) before I can engage reverse. Hopefully this will help with deciphering this problem. Thanks for all your help......Norm |
