MG MGA - T9 search

I will be looking for a T9 transmission to rebulid to do the Hi-Gear conversion. Can anyone confirm that the Sierra model sold in the UK is the same as the Mercury Merkur xr4ti or Scorpion sold here in the states, and whether or not the same transmission was used in these cars.? Is T 9 the only designation to identify this trans. or is there an actual part #. I think I read that gear ratios inside the box can vary between standard, modified, and close ratio. Which is preferred and how can one identify what's inside unless there are part numbers somewhee on the case?

Al,

My understanding from reading posts on this issue in the archives was that the transmission on cars sold here in the States were not the same. I ordered the rebuilt standard T9 box from Peter at Hi-Gear when I recently did my conversion and have been very happy thus far.

Check the archives. It appears that some of the XR4TIs here in the US had the proper tranny. Apparently there are 2 different lengths of output shafts. I found one a couple of years ago in a local wrecking yard and later sold it to a member of our local MG Club. He had to have the shaft shortened but now has it installed and working fine in an early MGB. Contact me off line and I can put you in touch with him.

Anybody want the parts list and a domestic source? I have the list in PDF. The source is BAT Inc. (Downloadable P/L)

D Sjostrom, I downloaded the parts list from BAT, Inc. and looked through it. While this seems to be a good source offering an extensive parts list for Merkur xr4ti owners, I did not find that the T 9 transmission was available through them. There were some misc. trans. parts for sale, but no complete units. I will contact tnem by phone today and ask directly.
Thanks for the lead.
