MG MGA - tachometer cable
I recently installed a new tachometer cable. The original cable broke shortly after it was re-installed. The new cable only lasted perhaps 15 minutes before it broke also; in the same place as the original cable: about an inch from the end that goes into the engine. Am I doing something wrong? In both cases, I snugged the connector tightly on the engine end making sure the cable was centered. Maybe this end shouldn't tightened down firmly? (Allow the cable sheath and connecting flange to "float"?) Any advice would be appreciated before I sacrifice yet another cable. John |

I had this happen on my TF and it turned out that it was the tachometer head that was dragging (almost seized). I cleaned it and lubricated it and all was well. Sandy |

Hi Sandy, The tachometer movement appeared normal while it was working... not jumpy, as if it were binding and releasing. I'll look inside the gauge today. Thanks, John |

John, If you take a #3 (red) Robertson square head) screwdriver bit it will fit into the drive in the back of the tachometer. You should be able to spin the bit, turning the tach drive easily with your fingertips. If it is tight, clean and lubricate the tach drive as Sandy suggested. I had the same thing happen to me on first startup in 2003 after the tach not spinning for about 30 years. Good Luck, Ralph |

Thanks, Ralph. I haven't been able to get back to it yet; hopefully this weekend. John |
