MG MGA - Talking of sex
Just posted a comment on another thread about the gender of cars. Mine has always been an 'it', is yours a 'He' 'She' or 'It' maybe ba*!$*d when things are'nt going well Terry |
Terry Drinkwater |
Mine is usually the 'A'. Steve |
Steve Gyles |
Mine's usually 'my car' |
Nigel Munford |
My 59 A coupe is called Fanny; my wife says she is my 'bit on the side'. US readers may not understand.. Shane |

This U.S. reader does understand, my previous project car was often refered to as my mistress. My wife christened my midget 'Frank' (short for Frankenstein)so the gender is male. The A is just that for the time being. I think you have to drive a car for a while and get used to it's quirks and excentricities before you know if it's male, female, or just a #$%&:. |
Bill Young |
With a Canadian accent, it's the 'Eh'. Karl |
Karl |
The C is refered to as the "C". On the other hand my wifes "A" likes me so much that I named it Christine |

I've always found most cars masculine, even some of the "cute" ones like Nash Metropolitans. My cars are referred to as "The B" or "The Raisin" for the '65 B roadster, "The GT" or "Cedric" for the 67 BGT, and the rest are the TC, the YB and the A. |
Steve Simmons |
Since mine is under restoration I have not named it. My wife however has begun to call it that F'ing car. |
M Gannon |
If you install a double overhead cam engine in an MGA you get a brute...thus the '59 is Brutus. |
Paul Hanley |
There are a few guys over in the Spridget section that refer to their cars only by name. Like, "I took Sally to town today." At first, it leaves me wondering who Sally is and then I end up irritated for having to decipher that Sally is actually a car of unknown make or model. Naming the car is one thing, but acting like it's pet and referring to it only by name is creepy and a little sad. |
Kemper |
Yes - I am with you Kemper - bit creepy - mine is just "the MGA" (it is just a machine after all) although like M Gannon I have a feeling my wife says something similar behind my back. Cheers Cam |
C Cunningham |
The MGAs are just called that, but the MGB is often referred to as 'Miss B', after an elementary school teacher my daughters had. She was a fashion queen a bit past her prime and always known by her last initial. |
John DeWolf |
When people ask aboutmy 1500 roadster, I tell em that she is "an old girl, a 1956 MGA 1500 roadster" |
Glenn |
My wife and I already owned a '55 TF-1500, a '59 MGA and a '65 MGB when we saw the need to add a '70 MGB. Since we started naming all of our cars when our two daughters were very young, we looked for a name for the '70 B. My wife decided that it was a female because it has a split bumper. I had to agree hince it's name became "Bessie". Cheers - Dennis |
Dennis & Pat Rainey |
In the UK it was called Jessica by then girlfriend (license plate was JSK 921). In Switzerland it went a long time with no name (licence plates like ZH 196000 don't lend themselves to easy names), but was christened Lola last year to keep a B called Oscar company. Lola has (by the way) rather a lot more grunt than Oscar, so perhaps the racing connotations with the name are rather appropriate. |

My wife always called the 58 baby girl and then the 56 old girl. I'll refer to them the same way to her only. They are cars, but they require enough care to almost be considered pets. Maybe I'd name them Frank and Ernest. Nah. |
Tom |
I usualy refere to it as the MG or the MGA. When it had the 1500 it seemed more female but after putting in the 1800 it grew a set and in my mind became more masculine. My wife and daughter call it the "little car". Kris |
Kris Sorensen |
Look at those curves on the MGA. How could this car not be feminine? Mine is named Penelope, but, in truth, I seldom do refer to the car by name. It's usually the MG or the A. Or MGA to the uniniatiated. |
Frank Nocera |
Frank: I agree completely. How could a car with such a shape be anything but feminine/ My TR4 ,on the other hand ( with 2.3 litre high torque engine ) is definately male. |
w.g cook |
Within the family they're referred to as the "white car" the "yellow car" or the "A's". Otherwise referred to as MGA's. |
JohnB |
Simple - she's the "A"... Pete |
Pete Tipping |
Not exactly a gender distinction, but my 14 year old daughter had this to say when comparing my wife's '57 1500 roadster to my '66 Corvette roadster as they sat side-by-side in my garage, both light blue. "The MG looks reminds me of a bunny. The Corvette looks like a lion." I maintain the MG for my wife (we call it the MG. She hates the Corvette. |

I have not had mine long enough to get on a first name basis. Right now I just say Yes Mam...... |
DMC Dan Carty |
Let us review the logic in assigning a feminine gender to the MGA. As one above wrote...just check out those curves and you know why. Also consider how much your A drained your wallet and your time just to make her fairly reliable. |
Jon Bachelor |
Triumph had the twincam's called Sabrina - can't imagine why... (you have to know your 50's personalities) |
Andrew |
My 'B got the name Val after I got tired of saying she was leaking oil faster than the Exxon Valdez! I guess I'm just lazy. |
Derek Nicholson |
The 79B is a girl. My Sebring is a girl. My Thunderbird was a boy. |
TheMiz |
My MGA's name is "The MG." I named it in honor of my long lost MGB, which was named "The MG." It has no sex, as it is a machine. Either way, it certainly has no gender. Nouns have genders. Mammals have sexes. The MG is very precious to me, but that does not lead me to anthropomorphise it. I have friends who have given their MGs human names, so I won't comment on how bizarre a concept that is. :-) |
David Breneman |
With gorgeous curves in all the right places, the MGA has to be a girl! Grant |
G Hudson |
Ours is called the "red one" as the "green one" is still in primer grey. Fred |
Fred H |
Has to be a girl indeed and mine is "Iris" for the iris blue paint she wears so nicely. Now I have just added a 66 Jaguar SType to the garage with a recently finished restoration that included a 350 GM small block with competion cams, headers edelbrok manifold and is pumping 365 horses to the tires so that one has a definite testosterone factor and is Called "Jagster" Ralph |
