MG MGA - Temp/Press gauge
Hi all and happy new year to you. Is there any way to swap the temp/press gauges outer holding case (mine is rusted)for an other one short of cutting the temp wire? Martin |

No. And it's not a wire, it's a pressure pipe, so don't cut it. That would be about $100 repair. See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/dash/dt101.htm |

Martin, Head the guru's advice!! It is a pressure pipe and often gets stuck in the head, especially if it is not disturbed for many years. Corrosion and dirt deposits can make it almost impossible to remove without breaking. I have overcome this problem by using a brass sleeve or nipple which screws into the head with the same thread as the heat sensor capillary nut, it then has a larger section to accommodate the capillary bulb and nut. This leaves us with brass on brass fitting which will always separate easily without damage to the pressure pipe. I'm happy to send a photo via email on request. Barry. |

If you need to get it out of the head, you can get to the other side of it by taking the thermostat out. You can then push the sensor out with some wiggling unlike the time I took my MGA to a garage to get a new clutch put in when they fastened mole grips onto the tube and pulled. dan |

Hi The whole gauge is on bench. I am/was looking to replace the pot, housing the gauges, without cutting the capilary pipe. I understand it is not possible,as the hole in the pot is 3/8in and the bulb 9/16in. Thank you all. Martin |

You can run the cover back towards the bulb and glass bead (sand blast) and repaint with dull aluminum Krylon. Will look almost new when done. Then it doesnt need to be sent in. |
