MG MGA - Temperature Gauge
The temperature gauge on my 1957 MGA stopped working. Is this likely the line to the engine or the gauge itself? Is there a way to replace the line to the engine without replacing the entire gauge? Can this be rebuilt? Thanks- Bill Chandler Ann Arbor, Michigan |

Its almost certainly a break / leak in the fluid filled line between the cylinder head and gauge. This can be repaired. If you still have an original Jaeger gauge, repair it. If not, its been changed already and a Smiths MGB gauge will do just as well. Nice motor..! Pete |

Bill, A friend of mine actually bought a temp gauge at a local autoparts store (AutoZone I think,) at a reasonable price, that fits and works fine. OK, not original, but very servicable. If you're not concerned with "origiality" this might be an inexpensive alternative. Cheers, GTF |

It is most often just a crack in the tube somewhere. You can send the gauge off to one of the instrument repair shops or else you can buy a cheap gauge at a local auto parts place and transplant the tube and bulb. http://www.ply33.com/Repair/tempgauge |

If you fancy a challenge try and repair it yourself. Look in the archives:- http://www2.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgbbs&access=&mode=archiveth&subject=6&subjectar=6&thread=2010070122184630000 If you can find some ether somewhere it won't cost you a cent/penny!.....................Mike |

Something wrong with the link I've given. Instead try searching in the archive under Temp/oil guage repair? .......................................Mike |
