MG MGA - Temperature tubing

What is the best place to tuck away the excess temperature gauge capillary tubing under the bonnet? I have it curled up close to the block, but should I tuck it under or over the air duct?
Art Pearse

Mine is coiled up behind the gauge and there is no slack at all under the bonnet..................Mike

The curls are necessary to allow the engine to move and vibrate without causing the pipe to crack. The pipe can be securely fastened to the engine and body to prevent any annoying buzzing, but there should be curls across the gap between the engine and body.

On early cars the curls went between engine and inner wing, otherwise they went between engine and bulkhead.

If the line has original routing along the top of block rearward, then it should have a P-clip on the lower bolt for the heater valve to anchor the pipe to the engine. There should then be one 360 degree curl at the front edge of the heater shelf for flexing, followed by a P-clip on the heater shelf. After passing through the bulkhead (with a rubber grommet) there should be a P-clip on the rear side of the bulkhead. Then any excess pipe should be curled up close to that p-clip before routing to the gauge.

On early production I think most of the excess length was curled up on the heater shelf, and little or none aft of the bulkhead.

If you take an alternate routing from the cylinder head to inner fender, then there should be one 360 degree curl for flexing between the engine and fender, followed by a P-clip on the inner fender. (I like to attach that curl to the radiator hose with a plastic tie wrap to stop vibration of the tube). Then route along inner fender (possibly an interim P-clip) with a P-clip on the front edge of the heater shelf. After passing through the bulkhead (with a rubber grommet), another P-clip on the rear side of bulkhead, then curl up the excess before going to the gauge.

OK, thanks all!
