MG MGA - The best glass cleaner?
I think I might have eventually hit on the best glass clearner, definitely no streaks - Autoglym Glass Polish. The only downside is that it highlights the chips and scratches as it dries white in them (can be brushed out if your a Concours fanatic), also best to do the windscreen before you polish/clean the dash as it creates a bit of fine dust when it is brushed off. Any other contenders? Mike |

I have a perspex sports screen. Whilst I can use the wipers I prefer not to as there is too much risk of scratching with road dirt hitting the screen. I use RainX 2 in 1 Glass Cleaner + Rain Repellent. Works extremely well. The other one that I occasionally use on my modern Euro box Is Mer Windscreen Cleaner. Again, it works well. That said I tend to use the RainX as my preferred option, certainly on the front screen. Steve |

A friend of mine made his own mix. The best I've ever used.. 1/4 Isopropyl alcohol, 1/4 clear ammonia, one tablespoon of Dawn dishwashing liquid and the other 1/2 water. Wipe the glass with newspapers and you will have clear windows without streaking. Cheers Gary 79 MGB |

I dont know If you can get HG stuff "Down-under" Mike but their mirror and glass cleaner works brilliantly. It is also really quick and easy to use, just spray on, a few wipes and the glass shines. Good on removing bugs too. £2.70 a bottle though. Cheers Colyn |

Mike I also use the Autoglym product. You are right about the white dust though, perhaps I will try Colyn’s option Paul |

Colyn Who stocks the HG brand? |

HG products are stocked by loads of DIY stores including B&Q, most smaller local DIY store keeps it too but you can get it on Amazon as well. HG do lots of different cleaning products for pretty much all purposes and be honest, they all work brilliantly. (No I am not a shareholder! :^) Cheers Colyn |

Clean with warm water and a microfiber towel. Then dry with a completely dry microfiber or cotton towel. Jim |

I’m interested in those who have tried Autoglym Glass Polish and have found a product that they believe is better. Steve, I have found Vuplex (vuplex.co) the best for perspex, acrylics and polycarbonates. (Side and rear windows on my MGA Coupe are perspex). Used in Oz by Qantas on some aircraft windscreens, originally developed for aviation industry. Mike |

I have used Autoglym's Glass Polish and although good, agree the white dust residue is a pain. On discovering Autoglym's spray-on Fast Glass I haven't gone back. If the screen is really dirty it needs a wash, but then the screen finishes up with a wiped looking screen. Then use the Fast Glass and microfibre, its just magic. Also if you have been out on a short drive it can very effectively remove the bit of dirt and and the odd squished fly. Pete |

Mike' My son keeps his rig squeaky clean and swears by Aero International They have a range of products ,interior cleaner, glass cleaner etc I've used some of his interior spot cleaner to clean some grease off the carpet at home and it's magic- havn't used the glass cleaner but his windows always look as clear as It's an inside/outside glass cleaner called view Don't know if you can get it in Aust. ,he gets his online from the US, it's not cheap but it's good willy |

Art, I have used Windex but nowhere near as good as the Autoglym Glass Polish in my experience. Others have advised that Autoglym Fast Glass is an excellent product also, doesn’t have the powder issue of the Glass Polish product. Mike |

Wood ash - lifts dead bugs, tree sap and oily residues leaving the screen streak free. Just moisten a cloth, dip in the ash and polish the glass ... |

Good call by Chris. That's what I do to clean my woodburner glass. Free and perfect.
Don't forget the other side of the screen to prevent it getting misted up in winter. In the 30s my late father-in-law used the sliced face of a raw potato to prevent misting - Chips/French fries do not work. I used one on my Lands End to John of Groats LeJog in December 1996. Never misted up. That said, I never had the hood up on my MGTC for the entire route so the rear of the screen was pretty much the same temperature as the front throughout. Steve |

I didn't realise you were driving a woodburner, Steve... Shane |

We will all be driving woodburners once the oil runs out.... |

One problem with modern car screens is they seem to be quite soft and after 300,000 km there are thousands of minor craters which, if the sun is in the wrong place make it dangerous. Would be nice if someone made a product which would optically mask these craters. |

After 300,000 km I'd treat it to a new screen! |

I agree on the soft screens, my Golf screen is in the 300's as well I find through the summer the glass gets scratched from using the screen washer/wipers on a dirty window and by the end of summer it's looking fairly sad, but constant use of the wipers during the winter cleans it up again, it's been self repairing like this for years but this is probably it's last go, I followed a truck full of sand on the highway here a week or two ago and it didn't like that at all-It's a fairly dark tint so luckily doesn't show from the inside but outside it's a fairly 2'nd hand |

We will all be driving woodburners once the oil runs out...." Well there's a new challenge for you Chris, I know you have done 1950cc engines, cross-flow head engines, supercharged ones and many more types. Well now it looks like you have a new project! A wood-fired steam-powered MGA sounds brilliant! although I somehow I can't see my wife being so pleased with the end result. On top of being the main navigator, she would then also have to take on the job of being chief-stoker! :-) Colyn |

A former cow-orker of mine actually attempted to make a wood gasification conversion for an older vehicle, but I think it proved to be more difficult to construct and get working than he had anticipated. I don't think he ever got it working. -Del |
