MG MGA - The 'Good' Head Gasket to Use
Hi, I recall reading about which type of head gasket to use when replacing one on the A. Could someone refresh my memory as to the brand AND where I can get one? SF? Moss? I would have to order it as I have no way of getting to a parts store from Tokyo. Normally, I would just search the archives but I am on my lunch break at work and do not have that ability. We are alos moving into a new house and won't have home internet access for the next month or so. Ironically, ADSL here is dirt cheap--but you have to wait for setup. |

It's the Felpro/Payen gasket, black fiber with metal eyelets around all the openings. See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/power/pics/eyebs_13.jpg Some of the newer ones apparently also have a thin bead of silicone around the water openings. Just order the head gasket for 1975 or later MGB. |

Thanks Barney, but where can we order these? Both Moss UK & USA have told me that they don't stock Payen brand stuff. |

Gary, As you are in Australia you should contact the Australian distributor of Payen products. http://www.fabre.com.au/brands.htm Mick |

Moss USA currently stocks a Payen copper/composite (can't use asbestos any more) under our part #296-400. Either that, or follow Barney's suggestion of using the post 1975 MGB gasket. Either one is of superior quality. FWIW, I'm not certain who the manufacturer of our 296-420 complete head gasket sets is. We don't have any on the shelf I can look at. It's a different supplier, so I'd venture a guess that they aren't Payen. |

Thanks all. At least now I know I have several options. I'm sure I can find one without any problems. Whilst the engine is out I plan to change over the rocker towers to the cast iron MGB types and wanted one on hand just in case. |

Mick, the only reason I havn't contacted Fabre is that they are not very interested in small orders. I ordered 3 MGA gaskets 6 months ago, and havn't heard anything since! |
