MG MGA - The Joys of Unemployment
Thursday, a manager in the company where I work(ed) called me into his office while my manager was out of town and summarily fired me it what was obviously a combined CYA and power politics move. Too much backstory to go into here, but after almost a year of being the only Unix administrator keeping our production system running, no vacation time, few holidays, 24x7 oncall, I was suddenly *free*! I even have a job interview, with a much better company, next week. A couple of my co-workers met me out on the sidewalk after I had been led out, and proposed lunch the next day. When I arrived in the MG at the restaurant yesterday there were 20 people there! Just about everyone in our office who wasn't a manager showed up. On top of that, it was a beautiful indian summer day here in the Puger Sound area. I was able to drive my MGA in, park it in a 30 minute zone for 90 minutes, not get a ticket, enjoy the well wishes of my formet colleagues, hear their compliments on the car, and drive back home in pre-rush-hour traffic literally with tears of joy coming down my cheeks. And we're supposed to be having a full week of MG weather now to follow. It's amazing the unexpected ups and downs life hands you. If someone had told me that getting fired would end up being one of the happiest weeks of my life I'd have called them nuts. If anybody needs a Unix/Linux systems engineer in the Seattle/Tacoma area let me know. In the meantime, the MG and I are enjoying the great weather and NO STINKING PAGER!!! |

Hi David, Is Olympia too far away for you? The shop where I work has got approval to migrate Websphere, Rational & other servers from Windows to Linux, there will be multiple instances of Linux running on the m/f instead of dedicated Intel servers. I asked the PM that is overseeing this and they have not sought approval from the customer for extra staffing yet but he told me if someone is interested to get a resume (our techies are mainly IBM m/f guys). I can find out more about the timeline, etc, if you are interested. Let me know. Ted |

Hi, Ted. Olympia is within my 'commute perimeter." Drop me a line at my email address and we can exchange info. Thanks! |

Good onya! I have found that these "Lemon" situations often lead to "Lemonade". Pretty much every time I have been let go, or quit an unsatisfying job I found myself in an improved situation within a very short period of time. Congrats! Rich |

David, Take some time now and enjoy driving your MGA. When I quit a high pressured job I found I got a lot relaxation taking my LBC's out for a drive and being able to think and relax (with out a pager). I finally decided what I wanted to do and found a job I liked and no pressure. I am now retired and enjoy my LBC's just as much. Good luck in finding a joy you like and remember.. relax and drive your MGA. David.... |

Hi, David - I've been doing exactly that. Although it started raining yesterday, in the week and a half since I was given the boot I've put more miles on my MG than during the whole rest of the summer. The phone interview I spoke of in my first post went well, and I have a face to face interview with that firm this Thursday. Although I'm enjoying the time off, it would be nice to land somewhere before too much of my savings is eaten up. |
