MG MGA - Thread Sealant
In the process of replacing a leaky water pump, I stopped by the auto parts store to pick up some thread sealant. A very small tube of the Permatex brand was almost $5 USD. Anyone have suggestions for a suitable substitute that is not quite as expensive? John |

You might try checking the plumbing section of your local hardware store. They usually have a selection of thread sealants at a variety of prices. Cheers, GTF |

Thanks for the suggestion, I already have a can of plumbing pipe sealant in the garage. Now if I can just get those two thermostat housing studs out.... I already have a set of the stud removers Barney mentioned on another thread. Found my set on eBay. John |

John - Rectoseal 5 is probably the best sealant on the market for threads on the engine. It is available from Lowe's, Agent orange (AKA Home Depot) or McLendons if you are near one of their stores. Cheers - Dave |

I have used a Permatex product for years called "Hi-Tack" for thread and surface sealant. Good stuff. Don't know if it's the most economical but one can (several ounces) lasted me for years. |

David, The big box stores are about worthless when it comes to individual nuts-n-bolts. I work in Bellevue, so the closest McLendons is Woodinville or Renton. :-( The Ace Hardware in Sammamish does have a pretty good offering, I even found wiper motor brushes there. There is a Tacoma Screw Products in Kirkland for the really oddball pieces. John |
