MG MGA - timng

please help i think i have a 1500 mga motor in a 52 td
i dont have any litt. a firing order and a few timing tips are all that is needed for this 52 td revampture thanks ?????
joe

Hi Joe. Static timing is 7 degrees before top dead center. Firing order is 1342. 7 degrees before TDC is located between the long pointer, and the adjacent pointer. The pointers are on the front timing cover, and need to line up with the notch in the front crankshaft pulley. Timing is checked when number 1 piston is on the compression stroke. This can be verified by checking that the exhaust valve on no 4 cylinder is just closing, and the intake valve of no 4 cylinder is just opening. hope this helps. Cheers, Glenn

Glen thank you for your feedback is this to be set with the engine running or not in my expieriences it is set while running using a lite and adjusting the mark this seems like that may be a little difficult to see
joe

My engineman told me, that the 7 degrees before was ok in the older days - but now gasoline is much faster exploding, so he set mine at 5 degrees before top - and it is running perfect

I thank you all very much for your support does the "static" timing have to be set with a light or by eye im a young mechanic dumbfounded by the simplicty of previous years thank you
joe

Static timing is set without the engine running and with a small lamp connected between the connection from the points to the dizy and the block.
The light will go on when the points open.
