MG MGA - tires - tyres - needed
I need to put tires on my rims before trying to reassemble the car's frame. I have a '55 mga roadster. I have been told the Khumo Metrics are good, but what I really want (for now) are the cheapest tires I can find that fit - all the same size, of course. I am looking for 175-65-R15's, right? Any suggestions welcome. I am in NH (northeastern), USA. |

Standard cheap tire for MGA is 165-80-15. If you only need roll-around tires you might look for some used tires at a tire shop or recycling yard. |

AJ the standard radial tire, which will fit on the 4.5" rims is the Kuhmo 165/80R-15. You can get them mail order from Tirerack for around $45. If your rims are 5" you have a few more choices, which are around $100+ from Tirerack. Andy |

The Khumo Powerstars in 165/80/15 are $62 per tire without installation at my local tire store. I ordered them, but haven't paid for them yet. 165 is an uncommon size - and there are lots more choices in 195/60/15's - but that might be too wide for the car and/or the rim. Has anyone used 195's? At this point, I am just curious - the cost of the Khumo's is good enough that I will probably buy those today and pick them up. Now, I need to find some tire irons and a stand - but I'll bet Barney has an article about how to do that. Thanks. |

Treadepot sells these tires for 47.00 each $188.00 for 4 including ground shipping. www.Treadepot.com |

AJ, 195s will fit the wheel wells, but they will be a bit tight on the stock rims as they fit better on a 5.5 or 6" rim. 185s will both fit great and look good on your car as well as give you plenty of grip. Of course the 165s and 175s are fine as well. I believe that I remember you haveing a disc wheel car. The 195s will definitely be a bit much for the wires. I have 195s on my TR6 wires and they fit the car fine with that wheel. As for the mounting, it's pretty simple if you're using the original tube type wheels, just some soapy water as a lubricant and a couple of tire irons and you're in business. I've mounted lots of tires in my youth with a manual type machine, drop me a line and I can take you through the process step by step. I just mounted new treads for my midget a couple of weeks ago on my HF machine, 205R60 13s on 7" rims and then mounted 4 Hoosier slicks on some spare rims as well. Your tube types will be much easier. |

According to the specs on Tirerack the widest tires that you can fit on 5" wide rims is the 185/65R 15. There are lots and lots of tires in this size. They also look great on the car. One anomoly is in the 205/70R 15 which also shows fitting a 5" wide rim. That may be a mistake. Andy |

I will give 190/60 a try on my 5.5 x 15” 72 spoke wire wheel, - but is it OK to use an inner tube for 15" x 175/185 wheel? - I can’t find a tube for 190/60 tyres. If somebody knows a source I will appreciate a hint. http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/Shop/SearchResults.aspx?SearchText=inner%20tube&WebCatalogID=0 Jorgen |
