MG MGA - tool kits etc

Hi all , I thought I would share the follow pics in case anyone wants them for reference

this first one would probably suit a later car, combined spanner for cylinder head and tappet, later grease gun, all correct tools apart from small feeler guage, and not sure about wooden handle screwdriver, I think the plastic tool roll is genuine as per the later cars it was brand new still in packet when I got it, all spanners are marked King Dick apart from long plug spanner

g c pugh

next, this one is the best all correct tools with correct names etc the only one I think may be a repro is the wooden handle screwdriver it has no markings, the tool roll is a repro supplied by Bob West

g c pugh

next, this one all correct, again not sure about wooden handle screwdriver and tool roll a newer repro

g c pugh

last one , again all King Dick etc and I believe but not sure that tool roll is genuine

g c pugh

and spot the repro

g c pugh

all together now

g c pugh

and if you still didn't now how sad I am, in case you don't know reduction gearboxes for frogeye sprites, three brand new still in boxes all genuine smiths no repros

all offers of marriage guidence and rehabilitation gratefully received lol

Gordon

g c pugh

one last one, brand new pump still in box

g c pugh

Gordon

Good work assembling that collection. Well done, but where are the jacks?!

Steve
Steve Gyles

Hi Steve I knew you would be asking that , I didn't bother with a photo as the only one I have is a new one from Moss that I bought , it is marked King Dick do you want a pic

Gordon
g c pugh

Yes please. Can you email a few shots from different angles, one showing the name. You should have my email address somewhere.

I trust that her who must be obeyed gave permission for the oily tools to be photographed on the lounge carpet!

Steve
Steve Gyles

Hi Steve just for you the first one is not MGA have no idea what from

g c pugh

next, tool roll again from Mr West

g c pugh

a bit closer, hard to see but vertical letters say king dick

g c pugh

Hi Steve even I am not that stupid carpet in garage

Gordon
g c pugh

Amazing Gordon - gives me a good idea of what I need to complete just one - does the pump go in the bag with the jack handles? looks like you recommend Bob West for the tool rolls rather than Moss. Cheers Cam
Cam Cunningham

Are you the fellow that I sent MGA tools to from Missouri? I remember a Cornwall address, but don't have the information anymore. If so, glad to see them put to good use in a complete set.
Rick Penland

HI Cam , I would imagine Bob's are the most authentic ones to use
Hi Rick very probably , although I lose track myself, a lot of the tools have come from the US

Gordon
g c pugh

Gordon,

You got the tools.....now all you need is an MGA and a 1500 style Tudor washer bottle with the small filler neck and you're set for summer!?
Peter Steyn

Definitely signs of accute MGA withdrawal showing. Hard to get a "fix" at this time of year with it all rainy and cold. Hopefully the tools will be enough to tide you over until spring. ;-)
Bill Young

Hi Bill no car now I'm afraid and Peter thanks for rubbing it in lol

Gordon
g c pugh

I won't divulge what I got for tools that might be in some of the photos, but it was more than I paid for the old '57 MGA in 1969. If we just had a "way back" machine, we could make a fortune and satisfy our "tinkering" needs for years to come. That's a nice daydream on a cold day.
Rick Penland

Hi Rick yes please don't embarres me, I do know it costs far more to buy all the tools one by one than you could ever ask for a complete kit

Gordon
g c pugh

Hi Cam if you let me have your email again I can check if I have any spares that might help

Gordon
g c pugh

Thanks for the offer Gordon - I will email you - cheers Cam
Cam Cunningham

Gordon, to put things in proper perspective, I bought the '57 MGA in 1969 for $75. It ran well enough, but was very rusted out.
Rick Penland

Tool kits are a favourite topic of mine, after completing the restoration of my coupe nearly thirty years ago I made a study of tool kits, etc. I was able to borrow an original tool roll but had some tools and the remains of the wide bag and straps, etc. The tool roll is similar to one of those pictured, it was black and had a similar finish to Plast-o-Felt which was used for the (grey) spare wheel cover and later for MGB tool bags. The tool roll did not have the jute lining (just a hessian-type material which was under the jute in the (then) standard Plast-o-Felt) but the bag did have (again like MGB tool bags). There seem to be quite a few patterns for tool rolls (all claiming to be authentic) which leads me to believe that there may have been variations during the course of MGA production. I also have a complete set of tools, bags, etc for my 1600 roadster even though it is an Australian-produced car (as almost all roadsters in this country are) and would have only had a jack, jackhandle, copper hammer and plug spanner (as MGB's had) when new! I am rather dumb but will prevail upon my wife and/or daughter to try to provide a photograph or two!
Barry Bahnisch

Hi Barry I knew there had to be someone else out there, I look forward to seeing the photos, maybe we could start a toolkit club lol

Gordon

Can I join? 11 Shelley Jacks are my offering, plus 4 other of similar type. Then the 2 modern ones (one scissor and one trolley) that I actually use on the car!

Very sad, I know.

HI Steve , I guess that makes three of us now, not bad for worldwide total membership

Gordon
g c pugh

Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo

Hi Bob that's my pension fund lol

Gordon

Gordon/Bob

Are they speedometer or RPM reduction gearboxes? Where do they fit? What are they worth? - just interested.

Steve
Steve Gyles

I may have exagerated just a tiny bit Steve but they are rare and to see so many together was a shock to me.

Not sure what they are worth, but a tidy sum no doubt. They are for RPM Steve by driving off the rear of the dynamo. I think early MGBs may have been equiped the same?

Steve are you going to Silverstone this year? I am determined to meet you!
Friday for a Speckled Hen?
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo

Thanks Bob. Now you mention it I think I had one on my MGTC dynamo.

Yes, I want to do Silverstone. As a reminder, and getting other forum users together, let's get a thread going in the month leading up to it.

Cheers

Hi Bob don't tell those vultures on the midget/sprite bbs lol

The wooden handled screwdriver is repro and I have other small Tecalemit grease guns that are of the plunger type (not sure which are "kosher" for MGA's). I put the bleeder tin and grease gun in the tool bag.
Barry Bahnisch

Second attempt to send picture!

Barry Bahnisch

At last! Ironically I have not used the tool kit, jack, etc but carry a cheap (but quite comprehensive) "auto-accessories- shop" version in the boot/trunk. I have a 12 volt battery on the driver's side cradle and a home-made box on the other side which contains a light weight screw jack (found at autojumbles/swapmeets), cheap club-type hammer and a piece of hardboard (to protect the "dog ears") in case I have to change a wheel. Even this is now superseded since I carry a can of puncture repair/tyre inflator. A 70-year old tragic with too much time on his hands!
Barry Bahnisch

Hi Barry, nice kit, I can just hear everyone on the site groaning, lol is that grease gun okay for the MGA, I have a couple like that but always thought they were for earlier MG's TD's etc

Gordon
g c pugh

Gordon, Not sure about the grease gun, have been told that it is correct but the informants are often guessing! The later guns, though outwardly similar, have an in-built plunger instead of the handle (the latter is almost certainly an earlier type so you may well be correct). Ironically I have a tool roll similar to your first photo, I think. I bought it in a small hardware shop in Suva (Fiji) just after I had got my MGA kit together. I was intrigued that it was almost certainly inspired by such kits as the MGA, and might well have come from the UK, but absolutely none of the tools and things were the same! This would have been some time in the eighties and reflected improvements such as welded seams, etc. I still have the contents, including the delightful little grease gun!
Barry Bahnisch

Hi Barry pretty sure that there were only two types of grease gun for MGA the little one shown in one of my pics and the slightly longer thinner one in the other kit shown

Gordon
g c pugh

I have my original TF tool kit. Most of the TF's were issued with an Enots gun with no handle and a spring loaded nozzle that came with its own little screw on cover. The Tecalemite gun in Barry's kit was illustrated in a Y type handbook as well as one rare issue of the TD handbook.

Cheers,
Matthew.
Matthew Magilton

Gordon, I do not recognise the slightly longer/thinner grease gun but the little bluey one was in the kit I bought in Suva in the eighties. I doubt that this type of gun was around in the MGA era. Matthew, on the subject on Enots guns, they were definitely supplied prewar, I have one for my F-type and SA's (and probably other prewar saloons) had an Enots on a clip on the firewall. Enots ("Stone" spelt backwards, probably the owner/founder's name) were around for a long time, my 1910 Humber has an Enots oil pressure sight glass.
Barry Bahnisch

Hi Barry, have a look at this page on Barney's site and you can see both the guns that I have which seem to be correct for the MGA at different times

There is a Shelley LJ31 jack with handle on Ebay at the moment and yet to attract a bid. This jack type was supplied with the Morris Minor GPO Van and usually sells for less than £10. However, the handle has the same cross section as the MGA's LJ23. Could be a good buy for one of you. Tempted to put a bid in but I have not got a working LJ31 but already have a good LJ31.
