MG MGA - Tranny Disassembly
O.K.! I've started taking the tranny apart on the 1600 coupe. Shop manual opened to the exact page. Tools at the ready. Completed the first few steps and crap! I'm to the point where I have taken the rear tail housing bolts and studs out/off and according to the manual, the housing is supposed to simply slid back and off. NOT! It comes back about a quarter of an inch and then it sounds like it's hitting something. At no point in the disassembly instructions did it mentioned removing the third member flange (you know..the back most part of the tranny that the drive shaft bolts to). It seems that would have to be removed before the tail housing assemby and main tranny housing could be seperated. Anyway, I'm stuck. Any tranny gurues out there? Thanks in advance for your input/output/help. |

Robert you are correct, the flange must be removed first. |

Hi Robert Could be that you are looking instructions for a 1500 gearbox? They do not have a flange, the sliding joint is in the the rear of the tailshaft housing. To undo the tailshaft nut, remove the tailshaft housing side cover, remove the 'C' bracket that threads through the selector slots, use a screwdriver to push the selector shafts to engage reverse and 4th gear at the same time to lock the box, and then undo the nut. ( it is an ordinary right hand thread, ie unscrew anti clockwise) Cheers ian F |

Thanks guys. Most likely correct as to the 1500 instructions. Hope to get on this in the next few days. Appreciate your getting back to me. |
