MG MGA - Trans output shaft bushing??

My 58 trans is in the shop being rebuilt and they tell me that the rear bushing in the gearbox extension that the driveshaft slips into is worn and should be replaced...moss part #461-060, (page 30) bushing, sliding spline mainshaft, is a big NA, (not available)....any ideas other than to have one made...I have called a few other suppliers and got the same response... thanks again,

Mike. I do not have a copy of the Moss catalog immedately to hand, so am not sure of the shape of the part. Nor, am I aware of what the bushing is made of. I have made bushings of sintered bronze from the raw material and this is not a difficult project if one has access to a lathe or knows someone who does. If the bushing is made from aluminum, or other hard material, it might be possible to drill it out and press fit a liner build it up to the proper size. If the outside is the area worn, the same principle applies except that you fit a collar onto the old part.

Any good machine shop should be able to make up such a part. However, the cost of doing a one off is significant.

If you can provide a better description of the size of the piece and the material it is made from, I can give you a better idea of what would be possible.

Les, The trans shop can have the part made, but at a cost of $150.00, it just looks like the part should be about $15 or $20, just trying to save a little if I can, plus it's always nice to have the correct part, the note next to the part in the Moss Catalog states that it has to be reemed anyway...I hope is that someone knows where I can order this bushing, thanks again,

Hi Mike, you might try calling john twist at university motors, he offers a gearbox rebuilding class which i attended every february (plus his 35+ years experience) so goes through a lot of rebuilds and has probably run into this before. you might be able to see how or if he has solved this one. he answers questions during his lunch hour http://www.universitymotorsltd.com/techhelp.html
