MG MGA - Transmission oil sealTransmission oil seal
I am leaking oil from my 58, 1500 transmission from the bell housing. I am sure it’s coming from around the front shaft of the transmission. I want to add an oil seal to stop it. Does this require replacing the front cove with that of a 1600 Trans to add the rubber seal? |

Hi Bill. I believe that early 1500 transmissions did not have a front oil seal. Later 1500 transmissions did have a front oil seal. If your transmission is a later type, then it should have a replaceable oil seal. If memory serves, I think there can be difficulty involved in putting a 1600 front transmission cover onto some if not all 1500 transmissions, since the two are apparently machined differently. I think the machining of the front covers for the shift rods is different between 1500 and 1600 models. I dont think they are interchangeable without additional machining. Perhaps Barney Gaylord's website would have additional information about this issue. Cheers, Glenn |

The later front cover does fit the earlier gearbox. Input shafts are the same, so this is a bolt on switch. If you change to a MGB diaphragm type clutch pressure plate (which is thinner than the MGA pressure plate) you can also install the early MGB front cover and release arm (different pivot point)and release bearing to make up the difference in space. Any time you change the front cover you need to carefully measure to fit correct shims for the front bearing. |
