MG MGA - Tripod headlamps
I had a pair of Lucas tripods which I wanted to install on the car. During installation one of them accidentally slipped out of my hand and fell onto a concrete floor. I had to pay dearly for being so damn clumsy, the glass broke. Would anyone have a spare one he wants to sell? I will be very interested if the price is reasonable. |

F There are a couple of different tripods from memory. I think one had a fairly flat tripod and the other angled out towards the glass further. Just thought I'd mention it to you so you don't end up with the wrong one- Willy |

F, You may not have to shell out for a new tripod unit as long as the guts from yours are intact. Look for an ordinary 7" unit with the same or similar glass. Carefully prise back the crimped edge of the reflector and take the glass out. Open the edge of your old unit enough to get the replacement glass back in, put the tripod in place and set it and the glass on a bead of epoxy glue or clear silicone. Bend the edge back to hold it. I know this is possible because a guy in the UK was selling refurbished units and would put on whatever reflector you wanted (e.g. including side-light or halogen bulb fitting). I haven't seen his ad for a while. Regards Malcolm |

Many thanks guys. I think I'll try Malcolm's suggestion. I know someone, (my next door neighbour), who did exactly that with total success. He will surely show me how. Rgds Frank |

Frank My car came with a pair of modern replica Tripod headlamps (complete with incorporated side lamps) I loved how they looked but I have changed them for more modern units as they give much better beams which allow much quicker night driving.(The car was originally race prepared and I dont think the lights were ever used.) They are just taking up space in my garage and I dont intend using them. If you really want the tripods you are welcome to them for the price of the postage to you. I have no idea how much that will cost, hopefully less than buying a new pair in Malta. Colyn |

Frank, I did exactly what Malcolm did, it takes the right kind of slim pliers at first to lift up the lip. Like Colyn I was disappointed with the light they gave out using PFB's. In the end I used a standard 700 series lamp with halogen conversion, plenty of light but a poor beam. |

Thanks for the offer Colin. If you can let me know the postage I will come back to you. How would you like the payment? I can send you a UK cheque in Stg or perhaps by Paypal. Please let me know. Frank |

Colyn, Sorry for spelling your name wrong. Which part of Yorkshire are you from? I did a tour in Yorkshire when I was in the RAF. Loved the area. Here is my email address if you want to contact me via email. fcamill@hotmail.com Frank |

Hi Frank I have sent you some info via email,I will look into post and packing over the next few days once I have dug out the lamps from the back of my garage. On the subject of headlamps, does anyone know where I can get some chrome headlamp surrounds (the brass ones )? My present chromed steel surrounds are quite rusty on the back even though they are only 2 years old. It appears that I have something in common with both Frank and Steve aside from the MGA, I too flew with RAF in the mid 60s from RAF Finningley. Unfortunately, unlike you both, I was a just a passenger in uniform. I was a 14 year old member of the air training corps taking a ride in a wartime vintage RAF Anson and I vividly recall the volume of noise and especially how much all the panels and fittings shook in flight. I also was next in line to fly in the "dickie seat" in the back of an RAF Canberra but it blew an engine as it landed on the sortie before! Although I was really disappointed on the day, with hindsight, maybe my "luck was in" that day. Colyn |

When I was restoring my car, I lived close to Cranfield in the UK. The "Vintage Aircraft Team"was based there, and restored and maintained 1950s and earlier military planes. They used to do small mechanical jobs for me such as machining and pressing things out if I would let them use my other car (Renault 5 GT Turbo) to charge up and down the runway after flying hours had finished and the airport using airport transfers tonbridge was closed. Said it was more fun than the jets..... I quite liked the jets as I drove the car every day. |
