MG MGA - Trunion swivel lower removal MGA
What is the procedure for removing the lower trunion swivel link from an MGA front suspension with drum brakes? My intention is to clean the king pin and replace the dirt seals. Other threads imply that the bearing hub must be removed then the brake backing plate removed. The factory workshop manual says nothing about removing all this, just says to unscrew the swivel (trunion) links, which is impossible for the lower - it hits the backing plate, especially the further it is unscrewed. Thanks. |

Yes you have to strip everything down so that the trunnon can rotate freely. You also need to remove the distance tube inside the trunnion. Don't lose the special spacers between the hub flange and the backplate - unobtainium. |

Even after removing the trunion distance tube there is still a possiblity that you will not be able to freely rotate the trunion off of the king pin. There should be a cutout section in the trunion bearing allowing for removal from the king pin. If the bearing cutout is missing or mis-aligned you will not be able to remove the trunion without first removing the bearing. When I rebuilt my front end last year neither of the lower trunions could be unscrewed due to interferance. Don't be surprised if the bottoms of your king pins look like this one. Barney's site has an excellent write up on rebuilding the front suspension and several detailed pages on reaming new trunion bushings. http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/suspensn/fs202.htm John |
