MG MGA - Turn signal indicator lamp weirdness
My indicator has stopped working. Had some rude comments made to me about no using my signals but when checking them they work OK, checked with engine on and off and all OK so don't think they are related, just bulbs not as bright as the newer ones. Anyway, the indicator bulb does no longer blink. I cleaned the terminals and solider them on. I checked with a volt meter and it clicks on and off to over 12 volts. I checked withe the meter on the spades as well as the inside stud and walls, all clicked on and off when the turn signal switch was turned on but when I put the bulb in it did not light. I check the bulb and it check out OK, even put bulbs to a small 9 volt battery and they lit. Tried more bulbs and all checked out OK but did not work when put in the socket. What am I missing. Power up to the socket, all check out OK on sending and receiving end but when put together it does not work. Thanks, Randy |

If you are talking about the dash indicator, make sure that the housing is well grounded. The lamp socket requires the case to be grounded. This occurs when it is inserted into the aluminum housing on the rear of the dash. Try putting a bulb in the socket and touching the outside of the socket to a known good ground. It should flash on and off if the outside turn signals are activating. If it does and then does not light when installed into the receptacle on the dash then the grounding of the aluminum recepticle is your problem. This is not an uncommon problem after restoration because the dash is painted, preventing electrical connection. I drilled and tapped a hole on the side of the aluminum housing and ran a dedicated ground wire. Chuck |
