MG MGA - turn signal light
Hi everyone - hope you might have a solution to my indicator problem. The green dash indicator lamp is permanently on when the engine is running ( not with just the ignition on). The indicators operate normally but the dash lamp does not flash - it just stays on. Now this happened only yesterday as I was out driving but just recently the dash indicator had stopped flashing just staying on when the turn signal was operated. I was underneath the dash this afternoon and couldn't see any disconnected wires so I assume I might have a bad earth or possibly a malfunction in the relay - any ideas before I start buying a new flasher relay or start dismantling the turn indicator switch? I also noticed whilst under the dash a small lamp holder hanging loose with nowhere apparent to attach it to -all the lamps are in their correct places in the other instruments - it is wired into the speedo lamp wiring but is a smaller bulb and with about 6" of red wire -it lights up when touched against the back of the dash - any idea where it is from? - can't say I've noticed it before and I've had the car 3 years - cheers Cam |

a.) The only bulb with a red wire is the map light. b.) There should be exactly four instrument illumination bulbs with red/white wire. c.) High beam warning lamp should mave blue/white wire. See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/circ_d.htm d.) Ignition warning lamp should have white and yellow wires. See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/circ_c.htm e.) Turn signal warning lamp should have light green wire. See here (1500): http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/circ_f2.htm or here (1600): http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/circ_f3.htm It is the flasher unit which powers the dash warning lamp, not the relay. If it was working previously, and you didn't change any of the lamp positions or wire connections, then you have a bad flasher unit. |

I'm with Barney, the relays seldom fail, and the flasher units are much more prone to giving up the ghost (my original Lucas one gave up a few weeks ago with similar symptoms to Cam's except that it worked intermittently when signalling right). I popped a new one in, works fine again without touching anything else. |

Thanks Barney and Dominic - I will fit a new flasher unit and let you know if it works - cheers Cam |
