MG MGA - twin cam for sale

Hi all, no connection to me just thought someone might like a lovely Bob West twin cam

It should not have 1600 style lights.

Mick

Gordon - I dread to think what the price will be if you have to £ASK. Mick - the change to the later 1600 indicator lights is a sensible upgrade in my opinion and shouldn't detract from the car's value even though it is not "original".
Cam Cunningham

I'd say the jury is still out on the early new cars having 1600 front lights.

Certainly 499, 500, 502 & this 503 car have all had them at one stage or another.

I wonder what the asking price of 503 is ?

Cheers

Having said that, I now find a photo of VLP500 from 1986 and it had 1500 indicators then.

Anyone know of twin cam 506 or 507 or 508 ?

Cheers

The first Twin Cam to have 1600 type lights was 2193.
The pushrod 1600 did not exist in 1958 when Twin Cam 503 was built. It is not just a matter of fitting one type or the other, a completely different wiring loom was introduced at a particular point in production (2193).

1600s had the least attractive tail lights of all the MGAs. 1500 sleek and simple. MK11 svelte and sexy. 1600 fat and frumpy. The 1500 front lights look best IMHO.
This one still has the 1500 turn signal relay so it should be easy enough to fix. Though this sort of problem should not exist on a car that is, apparently, asking so much it embarrasses the seller.

So, regardless of the sale price of this car (which I haven't got a clue about) what do you think it is actually worth?
P Parmenter

I would have loved to buy a twin cam, I think it is the thoroughbred MGA, highly tuned, highly strung and highly expensive to look after too, but a truly interesting and amazing classic car.

This one looks terrific, a bit too much on the RED side for my taste but if I could afford to own and look after a twin cam I would probably put up with the colour.

However, if I was to buy a Bob West restored twin cam I would much rather buy it direct from the man himself.

"1600s had the least attractive tail lights of all the MGAs."
Have disagree with you there RJ - and not just because I have a 1600 - my vote for least attractive has to be the Mk2 - cheers Cam
Cam Cunningham

That's a cruel thing to say about the cars of we MK 2 owners.
J H Cole

MK2 lights leave the rear fenders nice and clean, the better to appreciate their lines...
Mark Lambert

I own all three types and as such have no prejudice toward any one. My opinion only of course. MK11 has the best rear lights. 1500 a close second. The 1500 the best looking front lights. The 1600 got the worst of both worlds, sorry guys my opinion only.
The MGA has great lines and the least obtrusive tail lights break up the lines the least and so look best. There is just too much going on at the rear for the poor 1600.
Here is the antithesis of the 1600. Looks pretty good to me. too bad he left to luggage rack on.

R J Brown

This one has a nice lookin tail.

The asking price is £41,500 so I'm told.

Not sure any of the rear lights are better than others, they just kind of echo the decades they were made in.

The 1500 rear lights were the ergonomic 50s answer to the problem of providing a neat, efficient and economic unit that wouldnt spoil the lines of the car.

The 1600 rear lights are typical of the slightly more flamboyant early 60s, obviously influenced by the US trend in tail fins and also a clever way of adding separate indicators to the lamp unit.

The MkII rear lamps were just an attempt to modernise the updated model and once again MGs way of cutting production costs. Why not use the mini rear lamp with the rear, brake and indicator lights built in rather than the much more complicated MKI lamp arrangement?

I quite like the way it cleans up the rear wing but not everyone will agree with me on this.

My last MGA was a MKII and I loved it but I love my MkI even more.

So I dont think the rear lamps are a big deal, they just tell us something about the era in which our cars were made.

Gordon,

Another twin cam just came up on eBay USA. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MG-MGA-Twin-Cam-MGA-Twin-Cam-Roadster-/120574706618?cmd=ViewItem&pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item1c12d003ba

Bidding starts at $50,000 USD and includes a factory aluminum hardtop.

BTW - £41,500 is just shy of $60,000 USD.

Hi Jim looks like a lovely car, you could buy a small house/shed over here for that money lol, it's a pity some fool stuck the steering wheel on the wrong side lol

Gordon, those bumper guards are just awful looking.
Mark Lambert

The bumper bars may be less than optimally aesthetic, but the front one may be the only badge bar ever created for MGA that comes close to being useful a grille guard. Whacky Arnolt built those things specifically because others on the market were so good at crushing the grille on minor impact.

The rest of the car is amazingly close to original configuration, even the correct period radio. Maybe the only things I spot out of place are one P-clip on the 4" air hose, the lever type radiator cap (both fixable in 5 minutes), the twin tip exhaust, and of course those ugly non-original chrome wire wheels. All the people complaining about high asking prices for car with too much non-original stuff should love this one.

Barney Gaylord

Looks great, but is that wing piping painted or black plastic? Rear light plinth gasket definitely looks painted. I suspect with all the other attention to detail It might have been done prior to assembly for effect.

Not a big fan of the gear lever and red heater hoses, but also an instant fix if needed. Oil filler cap needs securing too.

Just having reading the description and having another look, it seems like it has not had the body off for the "resto" Hence no pictures of underside or boot!

Now I suspect the car has been repainted without removing the wings, what a shame!

Another potentially great car unravelled!
Neil McGurk

Hi Neil I knew you would ruin my illusions lol

Gordon
g c pugh

The car looks great in the photos until you spot the scruffy bits as pointed out by Neil, the lights have probably been changed for road saftey reasons. Old style red rear indicators are dangerous on our congested roads, most drivers think you have a faulty stop lights when indicating and try to overtake you, not a good idea if you are turning right! 1600 rear lights look better that some of the 'extra' lamps fitted to some cars

Terry
Terry Drinkwater

Painted with the fenders and taillights on, what a shame. another overhyped "dealer" car.The work done to make it look good all needs redone to meet the Quality the price suggests. Be honest this is a great low mile car with a cheep "cosmetic" restoration. I bet it is rusty under that shine.
R J Brown

Anyone seen the latest Shreddies advert, sure it's a red roadster "tip top"

Hi sorry he says ding dong, think it's Leslie Phillips, funny he did appear in one of the old films driving an MGA
