MG MGA - Two Questions #1
In a fully pressurized Mga master cylinder, if you were to remove the end cover ....should there be brake fluid here. If there is fluid, is this a sign that the interior piston seals are leaking and need replacing ? Or is the end cover gasket there to keep any excess fluid from leaking out of the m/c and fuild at this cover is normal? Thanks Gordon |

It's been a while since I went through this, but do you mean the cover fixed with two machine screws, with the rods passing through? I believe the external rubbers are dust covers/rod scrapers. Then the cover, gasket, first seals, and pistons. Though there is a gasket for the front cover, I don't believe it's meant to keep fluid in. Any time I've ever had a problem, fluid was behind the front cover (and drooling out the dust covers). I don't think fluid should be forward of the first seal and the only way for it to get there is to leak past that seal. Additionally, if you look at an exploded diagram, there is no functional reason for the fluid to be forward the front seal. Good luck, I've been there! Not only are hydraulic issues a nuisance, they're also a safety concern. |
Kemper |
Kemper is right. The dust cover and its 2 round seals are to keep dirt out not to keep fluid in. If fluid comes out of the front, the seals on the piston are not sealing properly to the cyl bore. 3 possible causes bad rubber seals, damaged bore or improper instalation. Randy |

Mr. Brown / kemper, Back to the drawing board with a NEW set of seals and a complete rebuild of the m/c. I was all most positive this would be the answer but did not want to have to go through the rebuild for a third time. First time...leaking at end plate/crud in the cyl. Second time leaking again a complete teardown and rebuild with same new used saels. So for a third time a new rebuild with new seals. Will let you know. Thanks Gord |
