MG MGA - UK Owners..insurance

Just have a look at a thread on the MGB General site regarding insurance for roadsters..watch out if you are covered by Footman James!..presumably other of the well advertised companies have the same "let-out" clause?

Thanks for the heads up on that Gary. I was insured with FJ until this time last year. I will check with my new company.

I'm with FJ and have just looked at the policy. It also says you are not covered if the car is left unlocked, now that could be tricky.

I've only just renewed the policy so am a bit stuck but it will be interesting to see what other policies state.

Hi I,m with Lancaster/ Cornhill and whilst they do not appear to have the clause about having the top up or down they do mention that they will exclude any claim for the car being damaged or stolen if left unlocked of course with an MGA or any early sports car they did not have locks, I have run the Co. this morning and I am waiting for their answer to confirm etc,

Hi again, Lancaster Ins have just rung me back to confirm that as long asall reasonable care is taken with the car that they are fine with the car being left with the top up or down as long as the tonneux cover, excuse spelling, is on if top isdown , they are also aware that some of these cars do not have door locks andagain confirm that the cars are covered, hope this eases some minds

I have spoken (at length) to Footman James and they have agreed and documented a statement that where locks were not originally fitted there is no requirement to lock the car.

I could though get no movement on the "roof must not be left open" issue and they would not accept a Toneau cover as a roof. They had no alternative policy to offer so it looks like a change of insurer next year.

In some ways it is a pity that they did not stick their feet in on the locks issue as I then might have had a case, albeit it slim, to get my money back on the grounds they had sold me an unsuitable policy.

Hi,
I originally started this discussion on the midget and B forums.

You don't need to wait until the expiry date. If you can take a small financial hit, you can move now. I have just moved to Pete Best because of this. FJ will return the unused portion of the premium less a £15 admin charge. Allowing for the calculation of the premium being in their favour, I reckon it will cost me about £20 to £25.

Also, for the same money, I found that the excess with Pete Best is less than FJ anyway.

Thinking laterally, you could claim that the "roof must not be left open" is satisfied by having it folded!

I like the thinking Steve :)

I have not had vintage insurance for many years, since I owned a Rover cyclops in the early 80's in fact.
I am sure it has changed but when the Rover was stolen, just after a full engine rebuild of course :(, the Insurance company would not pay out as it was NOT in the garage overnight. Within one of the clauses it stated that the garage I mentioned on the application form must house tzhe car all night, every night unless a special approval was approved (EACH TIME) from the broker to park it elsewhere. This included another garage!

So check those fine details guys, a bigger bunch of barstwards than Insurance brokers you will not find :) (unless they are estate agents of course ;) )

Hi all just had confirmation in writing from Lancaster Ins done via Allianz regarding theft cover that they are aware that the car was not fitted with locks and that theft cover will apply providing the car is left with roof up or if the tonneau cover is fitted.

As I said earlier, I changed from Footman James just over a year ago. I had been using them for 13 years for my MGTC and MGA. Suddenly, in 2006, their renewal premium soared and I looked elsewhere. It is interesting to see these exemptions in their policies now. Makes you wonder about the reasons.

I phoned around a number of companies and eventually found a company in one of the classic car mags and am very content with my conditions. I phoned them this afternoon and they do not have any issues with hoods down and door locks, provided that I have taken reasonable efforts to secure the car when away from home.

Specialist Car Division in Brentwood, Essex. They are brokers for Equity Red Star.

I pay £119, unlimited mileage, overseas travel and roadside recover, not that I will ever let anyone ever touch my car - it's a matter of pride to get the old girl home.

Hi again, just afuerther update on this issue, my wife has a MX5 insured fully comp with Norwich Union so I thought I better ask the same question for her car, they had to go and check with the underwriters who stated that as long as the alarm system was set it could be left with the top down and no tonneau cover in place, but if it was left just locked and the alarm not activated then no cover would begiven, so just aswell to check, although I can't remember the last time the hood was down on the MX5 lol
