MG MGA - UK Tax Renewal
Last year when I re-taxed the car I presented the V112 (Declaration of Exemption From MOT) at the post office and all was fine. The car was re-taxed without me needing to show them my then current MoT certificate. I have just got my V11 for taxing the car this year and it says 'This Vehicle Needs an Appropriate Test Certificate'. I would add that the notes at the side do say "....an original MoT certificate (if your vehicle needs one).....". How do I go about telling DVLC that it does not? They have the records that show it is pre 1960; 1958 is on my V5C. Or is this a standard statement and I just have to present the V112 at the the post office each year? Steve |

Steve, You can do it online now: the computer knows that it doesn't need an MOT. Just picked my A up from Mike Rolls after engine and gearbox rebuild and a new heater! Shane |

Steve, The automated system is picking up that the car had an MOT when previously renewing the road tax. It is assuming it needs one to renew. I had similar last year & queried the DVLA, i'll try & find their response & let you know. regards Colin |

Steve, The text below is the DVLA reply i had. Their systems is not working as per the reply i had. I suggest another V112..... "I apologise for our previous response which did not address your query directly. I should explain that the V11 reminder and our Electronic Vehicle Licensing (EVL) system will not recognise your vehicle as being MOT exempt until the current MOT expires. If you apply to renew your tax when an MOT is due to expire before the date of commencement for the new disc, the system assumes that a new MOT will be required. If you were to apply after the expiry of the MOT the system would check to see if the vehicle was MOT exempt and allow you to proceed without one. When you next come to renew your tax, provided that you wait until late in September (after the expiry of the MOT) you will be able to renew using our EVL service without an MOT. Although an MOT is no longer a mandatory requirement for pre 1960 vehicles customers are able to undergo voluntary MOT tests for peace of mind. It remains the obligation of the keeper to ensure that their vehicles are in a roadworthy condition at all times. I hope this response fully clarifies this matter." |

Thanks Colin. Makes sense. Steve |

So they must be trying to persuade owners of exempt cars not to MOT them? Shane |

I went down to the post office and was amazed at what happened. The lady behind the counter did not want to see the V112, nor even the insurance certificate. She just issued me with the new tax disc and said that it was now a totally integrated IT system and if there were any issues the DVLA would contact me. Steve |
