MG MGA - Under Bonnet Colour (and Luggage Rack)
I have always believed that all MGA are painted body colour under the bonnet. While looking for something else I came across a photo of the engine compartment of a light coloured (black and white photo) 1600Mk2 where the shelf and firewall are clearly gloss black. Inner wings are in shadow I am afraid, although if they were in light body colour they may shown through. The source by the way is a very interesting publication it is the 'Sunday Times Motor Manual 43' for all MGAs (except Twin Cams)that was published in 1963 hence this photo is of a very new car. It is probably a works photo as most of the others certainly are official MG ones. Another point relevant to another thread is that the External Luggage Rack as an optional extra came at a cost of £14 12s 2d and interestingly included mirror. It is not listed in USA optional extras. Paul |

Paul The document you are talking about is the P Olysager book called MGA Coupes & Roadsters 1500 1600 1600 MkII 1955 - 1962. It's quite a common little book. I keep one on the bookshelf for reference. I think you are talking about Fig 17 on page 21. Not thought about it before, but on studying it seems to have some odd looking wiring and gizmos on the firewall. I am wondering if it is a police car that was produced in black then painted white externally for senior officer use which I believe happened. Steve |

Yes you have completed the reference test. Having had the book since it was probably current I have no idea how widely it is known by more recent owners. I refer to it quite often. You are right there is something towards the centre from RH hinge and also what looks like a terminal block on the LH side. Left and right as car not photo. Interesting theory about a police restary on what must have been a brand new car. Has anyone heard of this happening? Paul |
