MG MGA - under dash cover
I seem to remember reading something re the fabled under dash cover, could not find anything in archive, has anyone seen or rember if such an animal existed? martyn |
Martyn Dunn |
Yes, it does. Someone will correct me I am sure, but I think these were only used in the early Coupé but can be used for any car and make a great heat stop and finiish the underside of the dash. Scarbourough has them, I believe Moss does too. These are supposed to be installed before you install the dash, wiring harness, or anything else on/through the firewall. -BMC. |

Martyn, I have them on my Coupe and Roadster. They are available from the normal suppliers. It would be VERY difficult to install one with the dash and wiring already installed. During a restoration it is easy and advisable. They have all the correct holes punched in them and glue to the body. They are about 1/8" thick with a black outer covering and a jute backing. Have a good day! John |

Hi John, Do you (or anyone) have any pictures? is it something useful on the roadster! I can imagine that it may be a bit of a PITA if working on the electrics etc. Neil |

I have been researching "Koolmat". There was a feature article in what I beleive is the latest "MGA" magizine. I find it to be a bot price at almost $500 bucks, but it is getting good reviews. Does anybody have any additional info on this product? The web site is: http://www.southgatebritish.com/contactsouthgatebritish.html |

Never used it, but it looks pretty thin. My guess is it would be good for sound deadening, but not so great for thermal insulation. |

I think this thread went the wrong direction, every body's talking about the firewall insulation I think Mr. Dunn is asking about under the instruments at the lower part of the dash at the steering wheel housing to keep the lights from the instruments from shining on your feet at night. I have looked and looked and no one makes such a thing for the A's But I am working on a set made from a 3/16" laminated sign board about $30 in materials and $3000 in time ha ha. Best of luck: Cliff(SC) |

Bill and Barney My MGA Coupe interior is completely lined with B.QUIET mat, This is a self sticking rubber type...aluminum covered material. It comes in rolls and what you do is cut out a piece to fit the area to be covered. Strip off the backing paper and stick it down. The rubberized part has the glue and all you see is the aluminum cover. I have put it every where ....the underside of the battery box...all interior panels...the interior bulkhead ....rear bulkhead and even the interior roof area. It is also a sound deadener and makes all panels seem very quiet...less tinny. I bought two rolls off of Ebay for $135.00 shipped. So far I have only used 2/3 of one roll. An example of what it's like ...if I go for along drive and afterwards put my hand on the tranny cover,in front of the stick shift, you can just feel the heat on your hand. Similar to holding a styro-foam cup of coffee ,on a cold day. Very slight. This spring I will finish putting in the carpets ,interior panels and headliner. I believe that this material will make a difference in the cabin temp of my Coupe. PS. I am going to add extra insulation ,combined with the B-Quiet to the roof area. When parked in the sun this added help should really cool down the Coupe. If you would like a sample of the material I would be pleased to send you one. Mr Gaylord...would you like some photos and a story about it for your website? Gordon. |

I think that Cliff is on the right track. Martyn is wondering about a removable panel that would hang below all of the under dashj clutter to finish off the area. Something like the molded card & jute insulation panels that were on the MGB (that were usually thrown away the first time they were removed!) Rich |

Gordon, -- I may be interested in posting your information. I can see where this is going, so I am starting another thread for Sound Deadening and Thermal Insulation. |

Hi just looked moss do supply the under dash tray, along the same lines was there ever anything to stop dash lights shining through the speaker grill if no speaker installed regards gordon |
g c pugh |
Yes. It is a silver faced cardboard piece to place behind the speaker grille. Moss sells that too, 233-760 blanking plate. |
Barney Gaylord |
thanks once again Barney gordon |

gc pugh, I just looked in the new Moss Cat. could not find the trays, would you give me the part number for the under dash trays, I will order a set ASAP as it will save me a lot of time. Thanks Cliff(SC) |

There are no "under dash trays" for an MGA and never were (expept maybe as some rare aftermarket part). There is an "under dash pad set" which is an insulation pad for the heater shelf and upper bulkhead, as originally used on the MGA Coupe. Moss #241-980 is the appropriate shape, not the same material but much better material than original. It is a thick foam pad with a tough high density skin on the exposed side. |

Jones, C, SC and gc pugh, you have to realize that there is a Moss USA and MOSS UK catalog. Two completely separate publications, different format, different part numbers used and not the same range of item available. They get some stuff that we don't and vice versa. |
Derek Nicholson |
Derek, I know there's a Moss UK & US. I have a way of ordering for both. I place my order 2 times a year for the UK. I thought some one found something I misted. Barney, I will post in the other thread. CLiff(SC) |
