MG MGA - Unleaded top end, Judson etc
Two queries for the experienced .... I have had my 1960 1600 for 25 years and it has never had a top end valve trim change for unleaded fuel. Cylinder pressures are good with standard compression ratio and and I have Been feeding itunleaded for about 10 to 15 years . I do put an additive into the tank but have no idea whether it does any good. 1st query.... With the Judson set up a top end lubricant called Marvel Oil is constantly vacuum metered into the supercharger and therefore into top end . Adding another in the tank seems less effective and belt and braces... 2nd query...I have been using super here in Oz ( octane 98 ) and wonder whether I can reduce to normal unleaded or a mix ( big price incentive here in Oz). I avoid knowingly putting any fuel with ethanol into the tank. |

Big price incentive here too Neil! If it were mine I would try it, I think the engine will let you know if it doesn't like it. I suppose it depends on whether fitting a supercharger is the same as upping the compression ratio, in which case it probably won't like it. |

Neil My current Judson setup suffers from predetonation if I use cheap fuel. I use 98 Octane and it's then fine. I won't pay the ridiculous cost of the Shell 100 Octane stuff, that price is just insane! The MMO is not a lead substitute Dominic |
