MG MGA - Valve Oil Seal Placement
On the valve stems, do the seals go in the groove at the top of the valve stem or should it be pushed down as far towards the valve guide as possible? Thanks! |

Ha, RTFM! "Compress the valve springs and push a new synthetic rubber packing ring over the tip of the valve stem down to the bottom of the cotter groove." |

Jamie, you can install seals on the intakes of the type that fit over the top of the valve guide. |

Original "valve seal" is just a little o-ring intended to go in the spring cap under the split cotters to stop oil running down the valve stem from the top end. As noted, position the seal in the bottom of the groove in the valve stem (type-A groove), then insert the cotters and capture the assembly inside of the spring cap. For the type-B groove in later MGB engines (early 1968), position the o-ring just below the smaller groove, set the cotters against it, and nest it all in the spring cap. |
