MG MGA - Valve springs
Stripping my head today, I see that the valve springs are single, not double. Is this standard ? (1600 head) |

I have an engine with double springs, but don't know whether it's stock or not. |

The factory Service Parts List shows the double valve springs that it should have. Image attached to this message and the next. Mick |

Second image attached. A bit difficult to see but there is shown Spring (outer) and Spring (inner). Mick |

Obviously you should fit the correct springs, but if the engine has been running it would be interesting to check the tension of the single springs with the tension of a correct pair of springs. Workshop Manual data attached. Mick |

The PO installed an Austin A60 block(=1622 cc). I thought he had kept the 1600 head. Maybe it is an A60 head, but the casting no is 1H967, which is 1600 and the valve sizes are same as the 1600. I guess I should get the right springs for the higher rpm; I am swapping the cam for the proper one. Hopefully they will fit the spring caps, or whatever they are called. Anyone out there have a closeup pic of the spring caps , top & bottom? |
