MG MGA - Vokes air filter elements

I found I have one element that is 1 3/4" thick and the other 1 7/8". Neither cannisters have the flat felt pads fitted (as shown in the Moss catalogue and workshop manual). What is the correct thickness of the elements and felt pads? It seems you do not need the felt pads with the thicker element?
I am trying to keep my car somewhat original - should I not worry and convert to K&N paper elements using the MGAguru method?

Mike - I started out being a purist after restoring my MkII in 2004. I used the original type air filters, but after a trip to MG2006 this past summer, I realized that you can't always avoid dusty roads. The original elements are, as an MGA friend once said to me, "only good for keeping out rocks and small animals", so I converted to the K&N filters. I didn't have access to a grinder per Barney's website instructions, so I used a different type K&N product - E3212 - that fit pretty well without using the outer screens.

I believe the K&N 3212 fits even with the screens around them. I had to trim a bit from the screens but that was easy with tin snips. I also didn't have to do any grinding on the K&N, it fit around in tube that comes into the front cleaner cover, and I don't have any of the felt spacers in.

Modern parts are great in a lot of ways. Just restore and store all the original pieces for later. Could mean a lot of $$$ later.
