MG MGA - warning rear break failer

Warning dangerous break failer! Due to not being able to adjust the rear brakes up tight enough the pistons rose up the cylinder and cut a notch in the rubber seal by touching the hand break lever This resulted in pushing the break fluid straoght out of the cylinder on to the road.

Upon investigation and checking and measuring all the parts it would seen that even with the shoes adjusted to the maxinim on the cams the shoes still are not rubbing on the drums. Have I managed to by some duff linings? could it be that in a previous ownership the drums have been skimmed out to such an extent that the linings will never?

The hand book says that the linnings have a dia of 9.63'inches but my drums have a dia of 10' inches.
Can anyone measure the diameter of a good drum has any one got any suggestions

David,

It sounds as if you've put your finger on the problem: your drums have been turned a few times too many. I just measured one that I'm working on and it's 9.68", as nearly as I can see. The shoes with new linings contact it perfectly.

Is it possible that you have MGB rear drums or even a complete MGB rear axle?
John DeWolf

Thanks for the info guys Saved me a lot of head scratching My Drums have the same part number cast into them as the catalogue so I can reasonably assume the have been skimmed out once to offten.

CAN ANYONE HELP WITH A NEW OR SEVICEABLE SET OF DRUMS?

Buy them new, they are not expensive, and your life depends on them.... £40 each , anyone's life must be worth that.

Plus you know that they are to the right size, not cracked etc etc etc.

Scrimping on brake parts just causes the heart sinking moment that you experienced with total brake failure.

Thanks for tha advice Dominic but there seems to be a shortage of them in the UK None at Moss or B & G.

Warren Kennedy from http://www.classicrestorations.org.uk/ had a stack of them on his stall at last autumn's Beaulieu autojumble. I think they were £20 each and new but rather old stock.

Thanks Malcolm I have been on to Clasic Restorations and they are sending me some. I MUST SAY WHAT A GREAT THING THIS BBS SITE IS. In this case a problem shared is a problem solved.
