MG MGA - washers
Hi all, Maybe a stupid question. On our cars we use different washers in copper or fiber. So when do you use fiber washers and when copper washers?I would think that fiber washers are easier because they compress more and are softer. Thanks for the answer. Herman |

Fiber washers can be used for near zero pressure fluid seals, like on the downstream side of the oil pressure relief valve, tappet cover bolts, gearbox side cover bolt (one), steering rack dampers, carburetor overflow banjo fittings. Copper washers are needed to seal higher pressure fluid joints, like brake line banjo fittings, spark plugs, and various water and oil plugs in the engine block. |

I concur Barney's view. A few years ago, somehow or other a fibre washer had ended up in my clutch hydraulic line banjo at the master cylinder. I had a total clutch failure in traffic and, although there is an internal division within the MC to reserve some fluid for the brake side, I also started to lose brake pressure and nearly had an accident as I struggled to stop.
