MG MGA - Water Pump
Is there one water pump better than another? And which is the best replacement plastic fan for the MGA? Thanks in advance. |
Gene Gillam |
I’m using the Moss 7-blade plastic fan on my 57 MGA Coupe and my 70 MGB and have not had problems with either one. Going on 7 years on the MGB and 1-1/2 years on the MGA. Jim |

I use the Moss 7-Blade asymmetric fan, part no. 12H4744. Not sure if that is the same one that Jim is referring to? There are a couple of types of 7-bladers. I find the amount of air it shifts is amazing compared to the original MGA fan. Steve |

Jim, Steve, I’ve ordered the fan that Steve has as well as a new pump and the shroud. Gene |

Steve a local MG parts supplier has the Moss fan available -- but with this note> PART NUMBER 12H4744 MOSS 434-340 PLEASE NOTE: IF FITTING TO A MGA YOU NEED TO MODIFY PULLEY - OR MOVE RADIATOR FORWARD Your comments please. Barry. |

Barry I have a short neck water pump on my 1800 engine and have about an inch clearance with the radiator so not an issue with me. There was a thread earlier in the year about this. Someone damaged their radiator because of too little clearance. Glu |

Thanks Steve, I had decided to replace the water pump as well, and, as I also have an 1800 motor, I will combine the two. Finding the time is the problem!! Cheers, Barry. |

Ideally you need the 18V pulley and a short spacer to fit the 18V pump to place the fan in the right place so it clears the bottom hose and is the right distance from the rad - see the pic below.

My fit on the 18V. Gave an inch clearance with the radiator. Steve |

I fitted a 7 blade fan from Moss AHH6999Z - it fitted straight on out of the box, to my standard Mk2 setup - is this the same fan? Graham |
Graham V |
Graham No. Your one has symmetrically spaced blades and is about half the price. Steve |
Steve Gyles |
Thanks Steve. Do you know if there has been any comparison of the two different seven.blade fans. If yours is much more powerful than mine, it is probably worth me swapping, provided it fits, as I was contemplating an electric fan for slow moving or stationery traffic. |
Graham V |
Graham. I have not done a comparison. I went straight from the MGA metal fan to my assymmetric and the difference was very noticeable. I had no cooling issues before and even less so now. Never went above a steady 178 - 180 throughout the hot summer whether at speed, stationary or crawling. Some people, including Barney, have been having blade failures with plastic fans, although I have not picked up on whether that is the assymmetric fan, yours, or both. Touch wood, mine has been fine. Thanks Steve. Mine is much better than it was after a good flush out, new water pump, the seven blade fan, a shroud, and in particular, a mesh grill. Gene, I see you are buying a shroud. I did have a problem fitting my shroud, it took a lot of fiddling to get it to fit without the fan catching it, so don't give up! |
Graham V |
Graham, I’m actually questioning whether or not I’ll be able to use the shroud...I have a coupe with A/C and had to switch to an MGB radiator to get the upper inlet to the other side. It bolts up exactly like the MGA radiator but seems to sit a little lower...the fan is not centered on the core. I’ll experiment to see if I can use it or not. |

Main problem with Steve's fan is that it is 'NCA' on Moss's site. The other more basic one is there although only listed for MGBs.
Personally I have no problem with the standard fan. Or for that matter with my recent enforced replacement radiator core. Previously core was a Bob West one but new core is from only remaining radiator expert in Edinburgh who is well over retirement age. Excellent temperature control so far but I do live in Scotland and although we have had an unseasonably warm summer it won't have been anywhere near the temperatures some of you have to tolerate. There is a resurrected plastic fan thread on the MG Experience forum at the moment. I am not sure if my fan is one of those that has been shedding blades but odds on it is. That said mine has been fine. When you read the thread you gain the impression that the plastic fan is a disaster. However, I guess it is only the people who have a problem that post. The other 99.99999% of users are probably ok. Steve |

I received my new fan from Moss...it’s color more resembles that of the metal fan I had on the car and it’s a lot heavier/substantial than the other “MGA” fan I was going to install.

Gene I have been reading the fan thread over on the other forum. Barney has been involved in it. It would seem that there were manufacturing flaws in some of the brighter yellow fans; air bubbles in the moulding process and that caused weakness in some blades. I believe Moss has now changed supplier or has changed the plastic compound slightly resulting in the darker shade of yellow as shown in your left fan. My fan looks like the one to the right of your photo. So far so good. Fingers crossed. Steve |
Steve Gyles |
Steve, I’ve had one like the one on the right for years on my 1949 TC for years without a problem so you should be good to go for many more! Gene |

Pulled the water pump this morning, new one should be here tomorrow. It appears that this one is aluminum and has a fiber gear...I've never heard anyone mention that before. Anyone have any ideas? |
