MG MGA - Water Pump Replacement
When I first noticed that my old pump was leaking, I wrongly assumed it was the gasket so removed the radiator, hoses, dymano and fan and of course the pump itself. It needed a bit of coaxing but parted company with the engine block easily enough. The old bolts were showing their 64 years of age, so as well as a new gasket I got myself a new set of bolts, cleaned up the old pump and whacked it all back together again. After refilling the radiator I heard the dreaded sound of water dripping onto my garage floor … so it wasn’t the old gasket but the pump itself!
I ordered a replacement from MGOC, branded Q Parts, but when it arrived it wouldn’t fit. To cut a long story short, the raised collar surrounding the impellor is too large to fit into the recess in the engine block. As Moss are out of stock I finished up ordering a County pump from MEV Spares, which fits perfectly. Only time will tell if it stands the test of time, but so far so good. My advice to anyone needing a new pump is to measure the external diameter of the raised collar and ask your supplier to do the same. MEV were happy to do that for me. |
