MG MGA - Water Wetter vs. Zerex Racing Super Coolant
Over the weekend I have been attempting to Web research the pros and cons of Water Wetter, Zerex Racing Super Coolant and Purple Ice. Most of the info I found was from reviews and bulletin boards regarding the use of the products for cooling computers. All three products seemed about the same in cooling ability. The Zerex product was rated better because it did not have the odor Water Wetter has. Another review said the Zerex product had additives for water pump lubrication while no mention was made of such an additive in Water Wetter. Purple Ice testing showed it did little or nothing to inhibit corrosion. But what caught my attention was one BBS writer who stated that the Water Wetter needed to be flushed and replaced every six months because it left a "slimy sludge" as it aged. Granted this was in a computer CPU cooling application, but I was just wondering if any of you who are using Water Wetter have experienced sludge formation in an MGA application.

Water wetter is a superb product. Many race teams use only water wetter and water in their radiators. As I keep my radiator full all year, I use an environmentally friendly antifreeze, water, and water wetter.

Frank, we have used water wetter for years in a Coventry Climax 1100 engine with just water for vintage racing and have never seen any sludge buildup. / gil

Frank Check both the A and B archives. Lots of info there. I have been using Water Wetter, distilled water, and a water pump lubricant for a number of years now with no problems. FWIW Larry 58A

FWIW, No such sludge in either the MGA I had nor the MGB GT I continue to drive which used it for the last 8 years. I believe that Water Wetter has only recently (in the last year or two) made mention of a lubricating component, but it may have had it all along. During the years it did not mention this, I simply put in some Prestone water pump lube in the manner that Larry has. Whether it truly needed it or not, using Prestone pump lube did not seem to harm anything and does not seem to have contributed to any build up of sludge or other deposits.
