MG MGA - waterpump
Hi all, First thanks for the info about the the steering wheel gaitor. I am still working on the gearbox problem. But yesterday I drove the car for an hour(nice cold weather)and all went OK.So will see. But I have another question. Earlier this year when I installed the engine I ordered a new water pump. After I installed it I noticed that the belt did not lined up correcly.A friend of me had the solution as he had a pulley from an early MGB wich is a bit wider. After installation the belt lined up perfectly.Next thing I had to do was to put a few washers between the radiator and the supports because the fan touched the upper edge of the radiator. So I suppose I received a water pump for an early MGB.Correct? I would rather install an original MGA pump. Can anyone tell if those early MGB water pumps are better in performance or reliability than the original MGA waterpumps? The engine is a 1622. Regards, Herman |

Last year I ordered a replacement water pump for my Mk2 with original 1622 engine and it lined up perfectly I got it from Brown & Gammons was cast iron and cost around £30 I just asked for an MGA MK2 Pump! Paul |

Herman, There must be a significant gap between the fan and the radiator, ie, more than 25mm. If not, when the engine rocks forward on the engine mountings, the fan will cut into the radiator core, and you will lose a lot of the water. Then you will have to repair or replace the radiator. The original MGA water pump is available, and this, with the original MGA fan pulley, should put the belt in the correct place to align it with the generator and crank pulleys. The MGB pump and the MGB pulley both have longer shafts and deeper dishing so will not work on the MGA engine, I believe. Peter. |

The MGA has a stiffer gearbox mount than the MGB, so 25-mm (1-in) is a bit much, more than factory original for MGA. The space needs to be enough to slip a fan belt in between the fan and radiator, around 5/8-in (15-mm min) should be about right for a stock MGA. You might want a bit more space if you install an MGB gearbox with the softer MGB rear mount, or install the MGB fore-aft gearbox stabilizer rod, or the MGB engine mount restriction brackets. If you install an MGB engine the fan nay be positioned farther forward, in which case you may need to shim the radiator forward a bit. |
