MG MGA - Weber 36 Carb and Manifold Kit
| I am trying to find out which kit I can use to replace my orginal SU carbs. I have a 1960 MGA with the orginal engine and I would like to know if the kit that moss has will work on my engine, and if not where could I possibly locate one. Thank You, Joseph |

Joseph, I took a Weber 32/36 DGV off my MG last year and replaced it with SU's. The Weber was on the car for just over 9,000 miles. It is complete, ready to bolt-on, including air filter and manifold. The only parts needed would be the manifold gaskets. I will sell you the whole thing for $250, plus shipping. Frank |

| What are the advantages of the Weber over the SU's. Is it power, economy or simplicity? |

| Dan. The answer to your question is "None of the above". The Weber 32/36 DGV series is a progressive linkage which means the smaller barrel opens first and the second barrel begins to open when the throttle is about 3/4s fully depressed. Thus, it might have some slight benefits with economy, but, I have not seen it on my two MGBs equipped with the Weber as compared to my one equipped with twin SUs. Until you open the second barrel, performance is very limited. Might be better for crusing, but, again, I have not seen it with my cars. Some people do not like the SU because they have not learned to set it up properly. It does take a little time to learn how to do this correctly. The Weber, on the other hand, comes (supposedly) set up for "your application". Often it is not and even the DGV carb is more complex to set up properly than the twin SUs. Was I not required to only have a "single carb" on my late model Bs, for emissions requirements, I would have switched both of them over to twin SUs years ago. The number of people who "used to have a Weber" on their cars grows monthly. The SUs are an excellent performance carb if you know how to tune them. Their reputation for needing constant attention is, I believe, myth. I have found that all carbs, to perform at their best, require a periodic cleaning. The SU is no worse than any other carb in this and is actually better than some I have owned. Les |
