MG MGA - Weber 45 DCOE anti-vibration mountings
Does anyone have any recommendations on the best type of anti-vibration fasteners for my 45 DCOE?
I have had some problems with mine coming loose on a recent European tour. My carb has rubber o-ring seals between the carb and the inlet manifold which are designed to help prevent the fuel from frothing because of engine vibration. These are secured by allen screws and nyloc nuts which tighten through rubber compression washers, the idea is to only partially compress these rubber washers so as to allow the o-rings to flex a little. The other option to use spring metal Thackery washers instead of the rubber ones and I wondered if these would be any better? Is it normal practice to "wire up" these nyloc nuts as on a race car or would loctite be ok? Cheers Colyn |

I have found that Thackery washers can fatigue and break with the constant movement. I would recommend that you drill the studs and fit split pins. This is a bit easier than wiring due to accessibility to the studs. In your image the cupped washers seem very close together. Have you tightened them too much? Mick |

Sorry for double posting. I do not know how that happened. It was updated but should not be posted twice. A problem for the webmaster? Mick |

Thanks Mick,
I will have a look at the washers before i take the car out again. I was struggling to get the flange of the carb to lay parallel to that of the manifold and maybe i have over-tightened some of the fixing nuts. I will order some new rubber washers, screws and nyloc nuts and replace these, then i will have a go at drilling the allen screws to fit split-pins behind the locknuts. Is there a recommended gap i should leave between the faces of the two outer metal washers of the rubber mounting washer? Cheers Colyn |

Hi Colyn, There is no recommended tension or gap between the washers that I know. I suppose that half the unloaded gap would be a rough guide. Mick |

Colyn I have had no issue with Thackeray washers, nyloc nuts and soft mount kits over 7 years (see photo of installation). Bits still appear to be readily available from local Weber dealer. How old are the nylock nuts Really they are disposable items-used once and then binned--Reused they aren't much chop willy |

The nyloc nuts and indeed the whole Weber carb was new 18 months ago ( approx 4000 miles) Willy.
I have sent for a new set of rubber mounting washers, o-rings Allen screws and nyloc. (plus a spare set of rubber washers and nylocs to carry in the car). The new Allen screws are needed because I didn't have a 5.5mm Allen key in the car and I had to use a wrench to grip them. Not used to this new-fangled metric stuff!😊 Thanks to you "Down-under" blokes for all your help.😊 Cheers Colyn |

As long as nyloc nuts still exhibit adequate run-on torque there is no reason not to continue using them. -Del |

Colyn. You will need more secret storage for these foreign metric tools! Paul |
