MG MGA - What 12V in Australia?

This applies to Aussie's...what 12V battery is available in Australia that will fit the standard battery cradle? I normally use Odessy ones, but don't want to spend that much this time.

Gary, Ian P and a few others have used these batteries - Fullriver HC28 batteries.

These batteries have the perfect dimensions to fit into an MG 6 volt cradle with just enough room to fit the clamp hooks down each side if you put the shorter width across the car.

They are almost square at 165 x 176mm and only 125mm high so you will need shorter clamp hooks.

The battery comes with screw in brass terminal towers for clamp connections or you can bolt tab connectors direct to the battery or on top of the tower.

The Australasian distributor is R & J Batteries P/L in Ballarat!

They sell for around $180. They have a CCA rating of 410CCA and use a newer technology.

My own choice is to use a Varta C22 that requires the bending down of the rear lip of the tray and a modified clamp.

A merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year to you Mike. Just a comment/question - without going out to my freezing cold garage to check (-1C today) I’m sure my 12v battery is 90degrees rotated compared to yours, ie. battery posts running across the car. Is that to get it to fit your tray?

As Mike says I have used them in both my MGAs and Bs and they fit perfectly without the need for any mods.

I use the hold down clamps available from Supercheap.

Electrically they perform very well.

cheers

Hi Gary, the cheapest option I've found is the battery for a '85 Mazda 323/ Ford Laser (sorry don't know the part number as the car's in storage). No mods needed to the battery tray but the battery is a bit narrower so I have 2x blocks of wood between the battery and the frame and use the original battery clamp to hold it in place. The one in my car is over 5 years old, turns the engine easily even after a plugs out turnover to build up oil pressure and is left on an automatic trickle charger. Easily available from Repco & other retailers.

Bruce, the Varta c22 definitely wont fit crossways. It is a different battery altogether to the Fullriver type. It is a conventional auto battery, plenty of starting capacity but not meant to be fully discharged. The Fullriver is capable of being fully discharged and recharged ie on a golf cart but doesn’t give as many high amp starts as a conventional battery (but plenty good enough for a B series engine as proved by its popularity in Oz, maybe not as good in the colder climates where starting can be a bit more difficult)
