MG MGA - What car is it - Collier Cup?

I assume a lot of you have seen this video posted on the Twin Cam BBS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRZwTO1mg4Y
I assume it is an MGA but it has a different interior to what I am used to! Does anyone know definitively what car it is (it is an All MG race)? If it is an A it would be nice to see some photos of the car. Can anyone help?

Mike, looks a bit like a midget.
Gary Lock

Spot on Gary - it looks a lot like a Midget
Cam Cunningham

MG Midget driven by David Brown. He came 4th with a best lap time of 2:21.251. The winner, Charles Guest, did a best lap of 2:21.733. David Brown finished 9.566 secs behind.

Well I have heard of the SIS, the KGB and SMERSH from the Man from Uncle TV series, but this is the first time I have heard of that even more Secret Agency called GYSELE (Gylles's Intelligence Services Ltd )

Their number one Top Secret Special Agent who states his name as "Gylles, Steve Gylles!" is famous for his preferences for the hard suspension settings on his MGA. Apparently a passenger in his car will be "Shaken but not stirred!"

Also, Do Not on any account ask him for any of his secret MGA technical advice, as "he could tell you, but then he would have to kill you!"

It is not well known that he obtained instructions on how to install the ejector seat in his MGA from the MGA Guru Website under the secret modification section listed under "M".

Just call him on his usual telephone number, then ask for extension 007.

Joking aside,it was a bit of good sleuthing there Steve to find out who was driving the Midget at Watkins Glen.

Mike, thanks for the link to that, I didnt expect too much from the race footage at first but after watching the first few minutes I was kind of hooked and had to watch it til the finish. It brought back my racing days and reminded me of how much I miss it. Some great racing and also surprisingly clear video for Youtube. There was also some great footage in there of a white MGA steaming by which looked pretty quick too.

( Sorry Barney for using your wonderful websites name in vain. I hope I dont cause it to be overloaded with websurfers trying to access the imaginary secret "M" section!)

The video was shot with a Hero GoPro camera

Don't want to split hairs, but isn't that "Midget" wearing an Austin-Healey Sprite grille!

I wondered about that also. There are three possibilities in my view: streamlining is one; air flow into the engine (larger grille?); the other is that it is not David Brown in his Midget. However, it is a coincidence that he has the same race number as in the video.

My Gyles sleuthing was not that deeply investigated. The comment under the video said 4th place finish. From a 'Watkins Glen Collier' search I then found the race timing page: http://www.mylaps.com/results/showrun.jsp?id=1690485

That page confirmed his name and race number. A Google search of 'David Brown MG' images brought up the image attached above. It seemed to all tie in.

What would we do without the web?

Yes - I spotted that Lindsay - my 1972 Midget had a similar grille but painted black with an MG badge in the centre - I too watched to video to the end - plenty of overtaking unlike F1 - and where did that GT come from and go to so fast half way through the race.
Cam Cunningham

And here is the photo of me with my Midget and black grille - in 1975!

Cam Cunningham

Cam, yes, that GT must have been a V8, "dose of salts" or what!
Lindsay Sampford

Austin Healey Sprite, silver grille.

That GT was Les Gonda's V8. Great car and very quick. http://www.britishracecar.com/LesGonda-MG-MGBGTV8.htm
That was a nice drive and good video. I'm no racer but it appearas to me that that track would respond a bit quicker to some later apex cornering than what he was doing. My instructor at Heartland Park last summer showed me the difference there and it was amazing how much quicker I could go through and still be very controlable.

I just took a good look at the photo Steve posted, appears that he has different front wings installed one early and one later MKIII style from the position of the signal lamps. I like the dark silver or gunmetal paint color, nice look.
