MG MGA - What is this engine?
I have a 1500 cc engine in my MGA that has an engine plate serial number that reads 15K 926. The previous owner told me it was from a Magnette but my research doesn't show this type of number in them. Any ideas what car it might have come from or what this engine code is from? Stephen |

Can you post a good quality photo of the engine number plate and a few photos of the engine from different angles? Mike |

I reckon your K engine number is a furphy! See this list of BMC engine number codes http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgccz/technic/codeseng.pdf Mike |

My 1958 UK 1500 certainly says 'See Engine' on thecar plate. The answer to your 'K' query may be it is a serial number for a rebuilt engine, even if not the last rebuid. For many years I didn't understand my engine number that starts '48G' and wondered if my engine was odd ball but it is red, has the tacho drive, says 1500 on the block, and has the MGA sump. The Car Club engine number expert clarified my quandry as being the number series used by the BMC group for their own exchange rebuilt engines. They were known as Gold Star and Morris ones were painted gold, but the MG unit was/is the correect MG red. Incidentally I paid £50 for my 'new condition' unit in 1971 from a dubious factor in Birmingham, not far from Longbridge where lots of BMC bits came out 'the back door'. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any knowledge of what the rest of my number means. Paul |

Having submitted my email in paralell with Mike's excellent attachment I see that it says my engine should start 84G but I have checked and it definetly is 48G and my club expert had it that way around too. C Series are 68G. I stand corrected though they were called Gold Seal not Gold Star as I said. Paul |
