MG MGA - What is this for?

A carton of virtual beer to the person who knows what this device is for on an MGA?
Mike

Mike Ellsmore

Hmmm---Front disc brake,wire wheel,hub puller - maybe
Are they virtual cans or virtual stubbies
For stubbies I'll have another guess if that's not it but if it's cans I'm done at one guess thanks

I agree with Willy. Looks like some kind of home made puller
But I’m a lager drinker so let someone else have the prize.
Graham V

Willie, they are Carlton Draught stubbies on a par with Cascade Pale Ale.
Yes it is a puller but it isn’t for the front end!

Cascade pale ale
That's from down south, we don't allow that up our end----Got any Crownies----lol

I had that pin going in the splitpin hole in the spline and the screw against the stubaxle, but the chain was a mystery and still is
Seeing the beer is only virtual and I don't actually have to drink it I might have another go----------
----shortly, if I can come up with something

In the meantime I guess it's similar to what you'd need to get me out of your coupe if I ever got to get in it, only it doesn't look strong enough, I'll take some getting out--

A gearbox seperator :-0
Mark Wellard

There is a picture of it in operation on Barney’s travelogue for this fortnight.

would help to see some dimensions

Interesting,
Just out of interest, a mate is rebuilding an MGA coupe and bought a nice set of 15x6 wires for it, centrelaced and weirdly, and I've counted these a couple of times --70 spokes-- I hadn't seen them before 60 and 72 yes, but70--something different
William Revit

This 70-spoke center laced wheel has been nagging at me since 2005. Definitely not suitable for MGA unless you feel like widening all four fenders. See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/wheels/wl100a.htm

Hmm--Thanks for the info, these wheels are definately 6", tubeless and supposed to be the correct offset, You've got me thinking now, I'll go measure them up and get back to you
It'll be a couple of days before I can get in there
William Revit

That gearbox half is going nowhere until the output flange is removed!
Dominic Clancy

Barney
Went for a measure up-
The wheels are 5 1/2"
The rear backspace is roughly the same as the 48 spokers, maybe 1/8" max wider on the inside so most of the 1 1/2" extra width is outwards
It'll be interesting
So the centreline of the rim/tyre will be 3/4" outboard compared to a 48 spoker
Will have to wait till the body goes on to find out for sure, they are super strong looking wheels though

- It will if the nut is off but I think it is overkill, I usually just hold the casing and give the shaft a good wallop with a dead weight plastic faced hammer, the shaft isn't that tight a fit in the rear bearing!
Chris at Octarine Services

Willie, might make the steering heavier as scrub radius is increased besides hitting the guard issue.

The guy who built this puller just had nothing to do after overhauling the gearbox on a wet covid-19 day and had the scrap steel lying around so knocked it up as exercise rather than going to the gym and having a latte!

Cheers Mike, we'll just have to wait and see, I reckon they'll be right though ,but no big deal if they need to go
The puller has to be a good idea, cheap and easy to knock up and something to loan out in exchange for virtual beer -- or latte
