MG MGA - What On Earth is This?

Whilst my car is decommissioned from its master cylinder escapade I thought I would catch up on a few other jobs. Today's task is to change the differential to 3.9:1.

All was going very well. The differential came out no problem at all. I put the out-going diff on fresh newspaper on my bench and set about extracting the side gears to swap to the 3.9 unit.

And then I spotted it in the residual oil dripping out of the carrier........: http://freespace.virgin.net/stephen.gyles/odds_and_sods.htm

What on earth is it?

The size of the pin would appear to be the small locking pin (Part #267-120 Moss catalogue) that is driven in (one direction only) to hold the pinion axle (Part # 267-110) in place. It is driven in until it bottoms out and then the surround metal has to be burred over to prevent the pin from working loose. It would appear that this one may have worked it's way out. It certainly seems to be too bulb like at one end so it may be an incorrect size pin that was driven in but didn't really fit. My best guess anyway !! Good luck !!

Hello Steve,

It appears to be a stub from a welding rod. Perhaps it had found its way into the housing during fabrication.

Just a guess. But if it is 1/8 dia. I'm pretty sure that is what you have.

Sorry guys, problem solved. I feel a right plonker. I have just been into the garage to put the modified crown wheel and bearing assembly back into the differential carrier. I picked up my socket wrench to tighten the nuts, went to reverse the direction of the ratchet and......the changeover pin was missing!

It must have fallen into the carrier when I was undoing the bearing retaining bolts. It then fell out with the residual oil when I upturned it.

Sorry for wasting your time. Must be a lesson there somewhere, but can't think what it is!
