MG MGA - wheel bearing grease
Is there a specialized grease specifically for greasing wheel bearings verses the grease one uses to load the trunnions, bushings, and things like that? I current use Redline Synthetic for greasing trunnions. Will that work for wheel bearings? and what about the existing grease? Thanks, Tysen |

Hi Tysen. There is purpose specific "wheel bearing" greases available on the market. However, many synthetic greases can be used to replace wheel bearing grease, and actually supercedes them. Im not sure if your brand of synthetic grease is suitable for use in a wheel bearing application or not. Does the grease package indicate it can be used for such a purpose? If you are still unsure, you could try visiting the manufacturer's website and look up the specs on that particular synthetic grease. If there is any doubt as to it's suitability, do NOT use it! It could potentially damage your bearings. I would then suggest looking at purchasing either dedicated old fashioned wheel bearing grease, or better still, a synthetic grease that is formulated to replace the old fashioned wheel bearing grease. Synthetic grease would be my first choice by a large margin. Hope this helps! Glenn |

I don't think that the bearings are the issue here as whatever you put into them they will be fine. The issue is the brakes and if the grease becomes fluid it will find its way on to braking surfaces with disastrous results and this is a huge safety issue. Wheel bearing grease is High Melting Point and will not run out when the temp rises. This is all Lithium based and you can use plain LM grease or MS3 which has Moly added. Both are suitable for chassis lube. If you plan to change, make sure that whatever you use will satisfy high temp applications. |
