MG MGA - WHEN IS THE TIME TO SELL
Some years ago, March 1992 I bought a 1959 MGA roadster in Chicago, Ill. i't was just like the one I had in the PANANA CANAL ZONE IN THE 50'S. i've had it now some 18 years. has not run for probabily 12 years. Always been garaged, not sure exactly why. but i've left it set. ALL these years, my health has had some control over this neglect. Don't see many MGA's in kentucky? any thoughts as to value?or if their is a market for it. I'm not much of car buff and not sure just how to go about selling it. however i think its high time I desposed of it and not leave this responsibility to my wife. I would appreciate this boards comments and suggestions. garry irwin theirwins@windstream.net |

Garry, Sure there is a market for it. Is there an MG or Britsh car group that you know of? If so you could ask them to evaluate the car. Barring that, give us information about the completeness and condition of the car. We could give you a rough idea of the value. With cars like these it's always tough though. There are so many unknowns. Still, a non-running car, if complete and in "decent" shape could fetch $4000 to $6000 in my opinion. If the paint is good, the engine is free and there's no significant rust you could do better. Best of luck... Gerry PS: Take a look at the article in the recent MGA! magazine titled "Goodbye Old Friend". |

There is definitely a market for MGA in any condition, and the market has been improving regularly for the past 20 years. I would wager to say that your non-running car today is likely worth somewhat more than you paid for it in 1992 (in better condition then). Keep in mind that a drivable car will be significantly more valuable than a non-runner, all other things being equal. You could do yourself a big financial favor if you can get it running at least well enough to drive around the block for mechanical evaluation, and even better if the buyer could drive it home rather than having to tow or carry it. For information about selling your MGA, see here: WHEN YOU WANT TO BE THE D.P.O. (selling your MGA) http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/buying/bye101.htm The modern internet is a wonderful tool for checking up and keeping track of current market status, and also for finding people who may have answers to your questions. One of the best resources for information and assistance is a local car club. Occasionally I can take an opportunity like this to review some articles I previously wrote about MGA collector status and market value. I can still appreciate what I wrote in the past, even in light of passage of time, inflation, and other changes in the hobby and collector car market. See here: HOW MUCH IS A PROJECT CAR WORTH? http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/buying/bye102.htm SPECULATIVE MARKET VALUE (2004) http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/buying/bye103.htm SPECULATIVE MARKET VALUE, Update (2007) http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/buying/bye104.htm The floor is always open for candid discussion. |
